Millennium Force
The ear piercing noises that I heard reminded me of hearing Jamie Lee Curtis shriek at the sign of Michael Myers in Halloween. I quickly realized that I was not in the theatre, but rather in the midst of the world’s largest theme park, standing next to the tallest rollercoaster ever constructed. As I made sure that my jaw was still attached and not scraping the ground, I stared with awe at this massive tangled array of steel which brought together the Millennium Force. Heard about worldwide, the Millennium Force stands extremely tall at 328 feet and consists of over a mile of steel track. The rubber wheels racing over the track sounded like a lion’s roar in the middle of an abandoned amphitheatre. To say the least, the sound was mind boggling. Not only does the structure look as though it touches the sky, the speed that this monster reaches tops 100 miles per hour.
So this is it. My walk down the plank began as I slowly arrived at the teeth of the beast: the entrance gates. I was sure to remind my brother and sister that I loved them dearly in the chance that I would lose my mind after going mono y mono with the giant coaster. Cedar Point brought in a giga coaster called the Millennium Force which goes up 310 feet with a maximum speed of 93 miles per hour. It was the fastest, and tallest giga coaster in the world at that time. In 2001, Lighthouse Point Campground became a reality. Cedar Point opened its 15th roller coaster, the Wicked Twister in 2002, and added an ice skating program called Snoopy Rocks on Ice which was performed at The Good Time Theater. Cedar Point did it once again with the Top Thrill Dragster which was the tallest and fastest roller coaster at the time. It goes up 420 feet in the air and goes 120 mph. Cedar Point management invested into the main park and Soak City. Then they added Castaway Bay, a free standing indoor waterpark resort, near Cedar Point Causeway. In 2005, Cedar Point opened maXair, Cedar Point 68th ride. Cedar Point invited it’s guests in 2006 to go on the best swing ride of their life’s with Skyhawk. In 2007, Cedar Point introduces Maverick, Cedar Point’s 17th roller coaster, it was named the best roller coaster of 2007. In 2008 Cedar Point makes planet Snoopy and makes the Extreme Sports center. Sarah, with her energeticness, found a way to persuade me to finally ride the dragster. My heart was pounding loudly with quasi-hesitation. With that fast pass that I won during a game of plinko, we had to wait 5 at the most for the front row of the train. It was a better choice than having to “patiently” wait in a one hour line with the hot sun baking your back. We were only a few launches away from moving into the ride station. The theme song, “Ready to Go” by Republica, was being played in the station. When I heard this song, I felt everything but “ready to go.” There were two seats across per row on each train which didn’t make the regular line go faster. All I could think about was the death-defying plunge down the one unbelievable 420-foot hill, I had pre-ride jitters. The train moved to the “starting line”, also known as the launch area. “Come on, guys,” I yelled at my family, which consists of my mom Madonna, my father John, and my two sisters Alissa and Kara, as I ran frantically across the jam-packed parking lot to the opening gate that led to a world of adventure. As wide as the world around, my eyes pierced at the doorway to a world of fun. Families, of all sizes, were enjoying all the possibilities of fun. Hearing laughter and frightening screams, warned me of the experience waiting for me within the doorway to everlasting amazement. The sweet baked smell of funnel cakes swarmed into the fresh morning air. Before I knew it, my family and I were ready to enter Valleyfair, an amusement park that offers summertime fun to the maximum.
Body image dissatisfaction is increasingly identified as an essential target for public health action ( Paxton , 2002, P. 2) Body image refers to a person’s unique perception of his or her body. It is how we perceive our selves, how we think we appear to others and how we feel about our looks from “our own internal view”. ( Nio, 2003, P3). This internal view is associated with the person’s feelings thoughts and evaluations. It can either be positive or negative. Negative body image could be associated with low self esteem. This could include low willingness to be involved in activities due to poor body image. Self-esteem is an important psychological need of human beings. It is very essential for a person to have a positive body image in order to face and overcome challenges in life. It helps to boost motivation and mental attitude.
My career interest is to go into the field of Exercise Science and be a Personal Trainer. When I was private trained as a cross country and track runner, it made me realize that it is incredibly amazing how you can transform the human body. I was slow and weak but once I got coached by my personal coach, I became faster and stronger. I like to help people and make people into the best they can be and I want to go into the field of Exercise Science to be a Personal Trainer because that is what Personal Trainers do, help people. Personal Trainers train clients into bettering themselves, faster and stronger and that is what I want to do. It all began when a couple of friends and myself went to Six Flags for some fun right at the beginning of summer. We arrived there early in morning, which was about nine o’clock for us. The birds were chirping and the sun was bright. There was also a hint of dew, making the grass sparkle in the sunlight. The place was packed, people were standing in huge lines waiting to buy their tickets. My friends and I were lucky because we had season passes and just walked right to the front gate and walked in. Naturally there was a security check at the front gate, little did I know that I was going to run into them again in the near future. From there we went straight to the ride “The Mind Eraser.” It was always wise to go to that ride first, because as the day progressed, the line grew longer. Amusement parks are by far one of the most thrilling places on earth. As you wait in a long line to get in park, you can hear numerous kids, adults, and tourist shouting off the top of their lungs due to a tremendous jaw-dropping drop on their beloved roller coasters.
Studies of body image in the past have gained varying results as to the groups that are affected, as well as the amount of impact body image has with these groups. There has also been much debate over the validity of methods used to judge body image, and how well the measurements used actually correlate participants’ actual views of body image (Cash, Morrow, Hrabosky, & Perry 2004). Some factors that have led to this discrepancy in answers are questions that were framed to be more suitable to attain the attitudes of one gender over another. The initial studies of body image focused upon simply body shape which seemed to be more important to women, whereas body image affects were seen for men when questions of muscle definition were included into the questionnaire process (Ridgeway, & Tylka, 2005).
Social identity theory is based on four interrelated concepts: social categorization, social identification, social comparison and positive distinctiveness. Social categorization is tendency to divide and therefore categorise individuals into in-groups (individual belongs) and out-groups (individual does not belong); it groups different social circles based on the members’ stereotypical culture and behaviour. This often leads to category accentuation effect, which is exaggerating of intergroup differences and intragroup similarities; individual underestimate perceived variability within groups but overestimate variability between groups. Social identification is way of identifying individual with a particular social group based on their in-group norms and by doing so, may adopt some of the values and behaviours of that particular group. My internal organs thumped against my chest as I dragged my bag along the carpet floor and into the corridor. As I walked into the long hall, I glanced up and noticed the sign telling me I could get on. My entire body could barely hold itself together with the anticipation of the monumental, dream-come-true event about to take place. I said to myself, "I'll soon be in the air." I slowed my pace to further enjoy what was happening. Swarms of people walked around me as I treasured knowing that one of my lifetime goals was now inevitably going to occur. The excitement and adrenaline running through my veins could have killed a horse.
Body image is the mental image of one 's own body. Body image is very important because the majority of people think about their appearance and how they look all day long. Many people today have a very poor body image. The causes of poor body image include: body size, bullying, media, low self-esteem, depression, and even gender. Body image also has some very unhealthy effects on men and women. Body image in our world today is at an all-time low, but there are many ways to help improve it. The most important ways are to focus on the good and positive talents he or she has and to not compare his or her body to another individual’s body.
