Ever since the turn of the twenty-first century, the medical community has begun diagnosing metal diseases in children at an astounding rate. Recent studies have concluded that medical doctors have been increasingly diagnosing children with mental diseases of all kinds. This, in turn, has also led to physicians prescribing medication for all the mental problems they are finding that the children possess. One of the most diagnosed is attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. This metal problem causes the child to have difficulties paying attention anywhere. Drugs used to treat problems like attention deficit hyperactivity disorder and disorders like it are Adderall and Ritalin. The majority of people consider taking these drugs as a young adult

A new study by researchers says that hyperactive children have behavioral differences due to under active parts of their brain, a biological malfunction, rather than due to way they were brought up. This was revealed by a magnetic scanning device that allowed researchers to look at the brains of children diagnosed with ADHD. These studies and statistics reinforce the claim that mental illnesses are not invented simply to justify drugging of children and a disease that needs be educated to the public for better understanding. Rather, ADHD is an illness that affects many people throughout their lives. This topic is often misunderstood by the public. The media and medical community need to educate the positive side of this controversy and not just show the opposing view, which often times misrepresented by the media.

The criteria to meet to be diagnosed with this disorder are separated into four subgroups: aggressive conduct, nonaggressive conduct, deceitfulness or theft, and serious violations of the rules. Three or more incidents must be present in the past twelve months with at least one of the characteristics being present in the past six months. This disorder causes severe impairment of functioning across a variety of situations so it is important to keep in mind society and individual situations because this diagnosis may be “misapplied to individuals in settings where patterns of undesirable behavior are sometimes viewed as protective” (American Psychiatric Association, 1994.) For example, a patient that has recently relocated from a war torn country would most likely not be a candidate for Conduct disorder even though he or she may exhibit some of the characteristics.
