Per the Dictionary.com definition, Dysentery is an infectious disease marked by inflammation and ulceration of the lower part of the bowels, with diarrhea that becomes mucous and hemorrhagic. Some people feel that dysentery isn’t a serious disease. However, in the early 1800s, some areas were almost completely wiped out by this disease.

The National Institute of Health recognizes two types of dysentery. The first one is the Amebic dysentery, which is caused by a parasite. Tropical locations or places with poor sanitation are at higher risk for this type. Symptoms could range from mild diarrhea to severe loss of body fluids. The second type is Bacillary dysentery, which is caused by bacteria and causes high fever and diarrhea.
