A mangled pair of ratty skate shoes step onto the rough grip tape of a long wooden deck that has been cut, shaped, and sanded to perfection. As the feet push off, the board rolls down smooth pavement beginning a ride on an adventurous journey. Glossy polyurethane wheels roll on the asphalt as the rider leans left and right controlling his carves on the street. The wood deck flies just a few inches above the ground with the feel of a surfboard gliding through smooth water while riding a wave. When the rider begins to descend down a hill the longboard picks up speed rapidly. Now the speed is so fast the rider’s eyes start to tear up from the wind. He must carve on the board to control his speed. The sounds of the bearings, which are hidden in the soft wheels, make a humming as they spin down the road. This sound is recognizable to any longboarder or skating enthusiast. This is a sound that I have grown up hearing. Ever since I was about 7 years old I have been carving and bombing on longboards. Longboarding has been my longest and favorite hobby throughout my childhood. I have always been interested in learning the …show more content…
During my visitation I explored my mentor, Bob Waller’s, workshop where he builds his company’s boards. He explained to me all the distinct deck shapes and the riding styles for those deck shapes. I learned from my visitation that longer decks are usually used for carving and pumping similar to the shape of ride style of a surf board. Slightly shorter boards are usually used for hill bombing and slightly shorter than those are primarily reserved for freestyle and free riding. Some decks can also be lowered or commonly known as drop down. I learned from my research that these lowered decks can provide more stability because the rider’s center of gravity would be lower. Therefore drop down decks are usually used for freestyle
“The first type of skateboard was actually more like a scooter. These contraptions, which date back to the early 1950's featured roller skate wheels attached to a two by four. Often the wood had a milk crate nailed to it with handles sticking out for control” (Warwick Books, “The Concrete Wave”). The Skateboard came after the Surfboard which has been around forever and was one of the first extreme sports on flat ground. Many people got into this sport very quickly as it started in California and they’ve always had a
Snowboarding is a new sport that is very challenging and exhilarating and is attracting new fans all around the world. Snowboarding has really changed since it was first invented. It has become one of the fastest growing sports in America and the world.
The story starts with Eddie, an old man (Eighty years old to be exact) who works at Ruby Pier, a carnival-like amusement park. Eddie has worked there for most all of his life (except when he served in the war), and, even though today is his birthday, he still does everything the same way he would do things any other day. Today would be different though. A thrill ride called Freddy's Free Fall had been stuck with all its passengers at the top of the ride, and it was rather tilted towards the ground. Eddie raced over to tell the man running the ride to get the passengers off and then press the release button. The man did and when he pressed the release button, the cart where the passengers had been fell to the ground. In the midst of all this, Eddie saw a little girl right under the spot where the cart would fall, and, despite his bad leg, he ran over to save the little girl as the cart was falling. All he felt was her little hands and then, pain followed by the feeling of floating.
One snowy Christmas day in Muskegon, Michigan, a young girl by the name of Wendy Poppen tried to stand up on her sled while sliding down the hill. Seeing this, her father Sherman ran into the garage and bolted a pair of skies together with wood to ""act as foot stops"" (Crane). While watching Wendy use the contraption, some of the local kids ran up to Sherman and asked him to build one for each of them. Little did he know that he had given birth to the “fastest growing winter sport” (Prosl) known as snowboarding. The history, simplicity, and rate of growth of snowboarding took the sport from being completely banned from ski resorts, to being accepted worldwide with its Olympic debut in 1998.
My roller coaster is called, The Cheesy Coaster. The reason I named it The Cheesy Coaster is because it is cheesy. This roller coaster is not a very scary and it’s not very steep so if you don’t like steep roller coaster don’t be scared to try this one out I bet you’ll be fine. It also could make you enjoy highest roller coaster if you enjoy this one that much. This roller coaster is not very long and it does not go super fast like other roller coasters you might know. It starts out slow then you go up a hill I don’t wanna say a big hill, but it’s not a small hill so it’s not a very big hill but it is a little high but that won’t stop you from trying it out I bet. While you are riding it is playing music super loud and it might distract you
The feeling of my blade against the ice was bewitching. The rocky texture of the ice against the smooth blade of my skate dance together almost rhythmly. The freezing cold temperature of the ice rink brought frost bite to my bundled up body, the mixture of hot and cold sent my body into over drive as I tried to nail a perfect triple axel and failed miserably. Not wanting to accept defeat I got up and twirled again and missed; again I screamed at myself, now was not the time for mistakes. Pushing myself up I got in position, I raced around the rink trying to build up speed but instead I was slapped in the face with the slush my blade had created. I glided toward the end of the rink and lifted myself up as if I was a bird who just learn to spread her wing and fly. I landed on the tip of my toes and twirled then jump and jumped again. When I got down from my high I saw the mark of a perfect triple axel printed into the ice. A heavenly gasp left my lips as my brain came to accept the fact that I did it, I made a triple axel. The sound of sarcastic clapping brought ...
Although when I was younger, I was terrified of heights. On July 6th, my family decided to go to Magic Springs. Magic Springs is filled with many torturous rides. Roller coasters are one thing I have feared all my life.
Motocross was initially developed in the U.K. from bike trials rivalries, for example, the Auto-Cycle Clubs' first quarterly trial in 1909 and the Scottish Six Days Trial that started in 1912.[1][2] When sensitive adjusting and strict scoring of trials were abstained from for a race to be the speediest rider to the complete, it was called scrambles, said to have begun in the expression, "an uncommon old scramble" portraying one such early race.[1] Originally known as scrambles hustling in the United Kingdom, as the game developed in ubiquity, the rivalries got to be referred to globally as motocross dashing, by joining the French word for bike, motocyclette, or moto for short, into a portmanteau with "cross country".[1] The principal known
At the age of 15, Amy Purdy decided that she loved to snowboard. When she started snowboarding, she learned to have confidence in herself and love all the great things about life. When Amy was 19, she was excited about her future and what was ahead, but never thought about what happened next. At the age of 19, Amy had Neisseria meningitis, which led to the failure of her kidneys and the removal of her spleen. But, it also caused the amputation of both of her legs when her body went into shock. Her body stopped the blood flow to her legs to help save her organs. But, she is very healthy to this day. Before, during, and after this tragedy popped into her life, she knew that snowboarding would always be a part of her life forever. When she was in the hospital, all she could think about is how she’s going to snowboard again and what it’s going to take to get back on a board. Before Amy lost her legs, she was a massage therapist who loved to snowboard and wanted to see the world. With her future changed, Amy was still determined to do the same things she did before, but just differently. She knew she couldn’t quit, because quitting meant giving up things that were most important in her life. While Amy was in the hospital, she claims her doctor said, whatever you believe in, think about it right now. When that happened, Amy thought in her head about love. She believed in loving life, loving each other, and loving to snowboard. Now, this is what inspires her today. Even though she loved snowboarding, she never thought about going to the Olympics until after she lost her legs. She went to the 2014 Sochi Paralympics and won a bronze medal. She also started Adaptive Action Sports to create opportunities for people with physical disabilities...
1). Skateboarding consists of two styles, street skating and vert skating (“Skateboarding” para . 4). Street skatingboarding consists of skating stairs, rails, and ledges (“Skateboarding” para. 4). Vert skateboarding consists of skating half pipes which are giant wooden ramps (Skateboarding” para. 4). New trucks, bearings and wheels were made to exact specifications suitable to riding and performing tricks. The acceptance of skateboarding into the mainstream sporting community continues to increase, influencing manufacturers to produce faster, more maneuverable and durable skateboards. Decks have become thinner, narrower, concave and more flexible with upturns on both
Snowboarding is not a real sport, not a real life style, and not a real income. This is what some people might say about snowboarding and it might be true for many but for the few it is a job and it is a lifestyle. And I’m not just talking about the professionals, I’m speaking for the manager’s, photographers, and resort maintenance crew. But to me this sport has gone through an amazing transformation throughout history, the times of going to a fresh untouched face with your buddies or cruising through the park to make a edit. These adventure between friends has lead to the creativity and exploration of snowboarding. Through that exploration snowboard equipment you see now shows the progress we made through the materials and certain specs that
Snowboarding is a sport that is geared towards youth. When it was just beginning snowboarding was sort of an outcast activity on most mountains, now it’s become more mainstream. In fact it’s so popular now that it’s become an Olympic sport and mountains now cater towards snowboards. With this increase in popularity some of the traditional skiers are switching to snowboarding, which seems to be upsetting some of the younger snow boarders.
Created because California surfers were looking for a form of entertainment, something to do while there were no waves. No one knows who made the first board, but it's known that many people had similar ideas of skateboards. Many started with wooden planks, wooden boxes, boards and would attach roller skate wheels to the bottom. In 1959 Roller Derby produces the first skateboard with metal wheels, which then lead to a evolution and out going experience for society. By 1963 skateboarding was all the rage, popularity of the sport was ats its peak, then suddenly started to fade. By the 1970’s urethane wheels were invented and skateboarding picked back up with new styles and inventions to improve upon skateboarding. In the 1980’s and the 1990’s skateboarding continues to grow and establish a subculture. In the 2000’s many cities have built many skate parks and camps learning
