Before I started reading the book, I started thinking of old themes in divergent that might cross over into this book. The major themes in the divergent book where nothing can stand in the way of a family with a close bond and your identity defines you and how people react to you. As I was reading Insurgent, I was reading with the intention of finding themes within the characters. I noticed that both themes in the book Divergent crossover and a new theme rose which was the theme of guilt is something we all live with and it can majorly affect our choices. I have noticed all of these themes several times within the book insurgent with mainly the characters Tris and Tobias(Also known as four). As I looked back over my notes and the book, I would
In To Kill a Mockingbird, the theme plays an important role during the course of the novel. Theme is a central idea in a work of literature that contains more than one word. It is usually based on an author’s opinion on a subject. The theme of innocence should be protected is found in conflicts, characters, and symbols. In To Kill a Mockingbird, a conflict that connects to the theme that innocence should be protected is the death of Tom Robinson.
All Qui One of the main themes in All Quiet on the Western Front by Erich Maria Remarque is Futility of War. The novel takes place during the Great War and takes place in France. Paul Baumer is the main character in the book, along with many of his friends. In the book the theme of futility of war appears in the beginning, middle and end of the novel and Baumer slowly becomes more aware of what war is really like. In the beginning Baumer enters the war as a recruit and begins to see the reality of war. During training, he had to remake the officer’s bed 14 times.
Tris finds out about how Four only has four fears and that his aptitude test was for abnegation, but he chose dauntless as his faction. “He says, ‘I have a theory that selflessness and bravery aren’t all that different. All your life you’ve been training to forget yourself, so when you’re in danger, it becomes your first instinct. I could belong in Abnegation just as easily” (Roth, pg.336). It illustrates that even though Tris is struggling with the identity of having or not having divergent in her life, it looks like Four is struggling with the exact same thing. The universal theme of when people are trying to find themselves, the best way to know who you are is to first know who you care about. This applies to everyone because many people are confused on where they belong or who they are, so they just need a little reminder. This situation relates to the universal theme because Tris and Four don’t know where they belong in and who they are as a person. The words “selflessness,” “bravery,” and “danger” has a positive connotation and implies that the author is trying to say that to find where you belong to is a hard thing to do and it might be difficult along the way, but at the end it's worth it because you find who you are.. When Tris was still figuring out who she is, with the help of Four she figured out that having many factions is ok and being divergent is unique. The universal theme clearly shows that when you are struggling to find yourself or where you belong in, it’s best to welcome people to help you figure it
In the short story “With All Flags Flying” an old man leaves his house and his family to live in an old folks home because that is what is best for him and what he thinks is best for his family. The old man seems to be leaving his family for the old folks home to benefit his family, but he also seems to be doing it for himself. Anne Tyler’s “With All Flags Flying” explores the theme that humans are innately selfish.
Firstly, the most important symbol are the tapes which is what the story revolves around. First of all, they are a helped develop the theme since they symbolize the theme itself within the novel. They develop the theme because their purpose was to tell 13 different reasons why Hannah killed herself; which is practically how 13 different people have impacted her life. For example, on Cassette 1:Side 8 she tells the story of how Alex Standoll made a difference in her life. He made the "hot/not list" as a joke without knowing how it would affect Hannah's life. He thought of it as a joke yet it lead to multiple results that changed Hannah's life, such as creating conflict with Jessica. This show the theme because it is another example where one did not consider the consequences for their actions. Alex did not seem to think about how foolish life can create so much conflict but it did. As a result of it, the list had lead to many bad effects on Hannah even if it was portrayed as a joke. Another way Asher establishes the theme is by making an effect towards the 13 who were on the tapes. In Clay's case, he was dreadful the next morning. All he could think about are the
Themes are a huge part in any novel. In The Rise of Silas Lapham by William Dean Howells he uses many themes in the novel which he expresses through the actions of the characters. In the novel, a business story dominates a secondary love triangle. Silas Lapham earns a fortune in the paint business through opportunism, greed, and driving ambition. He wants his daughter to marry into the high class Corey family to gain the high social status the backwoods Laphams have never attained. Silas' conduct in managing his business and Irene's love affair are based on the same materialistic set of values which draw the two stories together. In the Novel, The Rise of Silas Lapham, the author William Dean Howells uses themes to develop the characters with both Silas and Irene.
Themes: While each chapter acts as its own separate theme for the text, there are themes inside of the chapters that are apparent as the reader works their way through the text. One of these themes is identity. Many soldiers identified as Christians and that Christianity was challenged when they were forced to kill enemies and faith was shaken by the overwhelming cruelty and death. In response to this, there were soldiers that would dress as Native Americans, people whom they viewed as savage, before/after killing, because they could then identify with their more savage side (37).
One theme would be appearance vs. reality it is seen mostly in Duchess and Mother Shipton because from being two pair of prostitutes, they start to transform almost into innocent pure characters going toward the end of the story. Duchess is an example of appearance vs. reality because after working as prostitute is not a good image which makes people thinks badly about her. She go from being forced out of Poker Flat to a different person at the end Duchess starts treating Piney Woods with good care, and even being there holding her in her last moments . Mother Shipton is another prostitute who was also forced out of Poker Flat. Mother Ship ton also changes a lot toward the end. She deiced to starves herself just to make sure Piney Woods would have something to eat and wouldn’t starve to death .Both of these
Themes played a big role in the novel. Such as imagination, friendship and death. Every time Jess and Leslie encounter difficulties in their day to day lives, they run away to their imaginary world of Terabithia. But ra...
The United States have always been viewed as a democracy. It has been portrayed as the land of the free for many years. Out of all of these years the States have not been free. It is all a façade and a very good one at that. There are many norms and values that have been placed upon society and have been accepted in the eyes of the public. “V for Vendetta” is a film that is based off of the graphic novel that was written by Alan Moore. Though the novel V for Vendetta was written in the 1980’s the drama film was released in 2006 and it definitely made a political statement. The film surfaced political and social norms, religious beliefs, and a sense of morality through the significance of the themes and the meanings behind them.
An example of this theme is Mariam’s change of attitude. She was very upset and closed off. When Laila first came Mariam had no interest in being friends. She did what was expected of her and so did Laila. Laila wanted to be friends with her, but it wouldn’t work. Eventually, because of the abuse they both receive from Rasheed, Mariam begins to love Laila. Mariam becomes close with Laila and Laila’s children. This makes the two stronger, because it gives them someone to talk to. They are separated from the world. When they have someone there, the terrible times in the world seem a little less terrible. Another example of this theme is the love between Tariq and Laila. They loved one another for years, but were forced to keep it a secret. Although Laila is married to Rasheed, her heart is for Tariq. All she wants is to find Tariq and marry him. The novel ends with the two married. They are having another child, so they are playing a game to come up with a name for the child. “But the game only involves male names. Because, if it’s a girl, Laila has already named her” (Hosseini, 415). This goes back to her love for Mariam. Love is a theme in this story, because it connects the ones that truly need it. In times of struggle love is still
What is going to be outside of the walls of this city that had seemed like the whole world? In the book Insurgent by Veronica Roth, the factions are broken and ungrouped, and there were two sides in this war, except when one side was defeated and the “winners” were backstabbed by a group they thought were allies. The main character, Tris, was part of the group that was betrayed. All the fighting stopped when a video was shown to everyone about how the city everybody lived in was to protect everyone and start a new world when the outside world was corrupted with deception, murder, suicide, and other horrible things. Now that it has been several decades since this “safe city” was created, I look forward to what awaits in the lands beyond the
One of these appeals is the fact that there are so many themes in the
There are many themes that occur and can be interpreted differently throughout the novel. The three main themes that stand out most are healing, communication, and relationships.
