The outcast of poker flat. There are several themes explored by Bret Harte in "The Outcasts of Poker Flat." Each character go though different stages which first starts off when they decide to head for Sandy Bar to a camp which neither have yet experienced. One theme would be appearance vs. reality it is seen mostly in Duchess and Mother Shipton because from being two pair of prostitutes, they start to transform almost into innocent pure characters going toward the end of the story. Duchess is an example of appearance vs. reality because after working as prostitute is not a good image which makes people thinks badly about her. She go from being forced out of Poker Flat to a different person at the end Duchess starts treating Piney Woods with good care, and even being there holding her in her last moments . Mother Shipton is another prostitute who was also forced out of Poker Flat. Mother Ship ton also changes a lot toward the end. She deiced to starves herself just to make sure Piney Woods would have something to eat and wouldn’t starve to death .Both of these …show more content…

I believe that in this story most of the characters change the way they are after going and being at the camp. Both of the prostitutes which are Duchess and Mother Shipton change a lot like for example Duchess being there for piney and Mother ship ton starving herself to give her food to piney. Another character that changes is Oakhurst that goes from being professional gambler to helping a couple starts a new beginning .A character that doesn’t change would be Uncle Billy who leaves Poker Flat with the mules and supplies and leaves the rest of the group with no hope to survive In conclusion in the story of “The Outcasts of Poker Flat” the characters go through a lot of harmful situation in the story. Being left to starve and die. Which likely ends up being the reason why most of them go through emotions and die at the end of the
