Importance of Diversity in teams
An Organization is a body of people who willingly work together and form teams with an aim of
achieving a pre set goal or with a mission, realted to the external environment and
factors of competition. Teams form an integral part of any organization or company
because it gives the required strength and helps to build a positive environment
necessary for achieving the end goals. The teams within any and every organization
share the goals, purposes and missions. All the companies or organizations have a vision
which is formulated, keeping the team size and market in view.

Diversity adds to the
uniqueness of business environment and makes it more tasteful rather than a usual
work place setting where in you are almost aware of everything the other team mate
knows. Diversity is a broad term and it is not restricted to just the nationality or caste
but it goes far beyond these. A number of ways in which diversity can be explained
include age, gender, ethnic origin, education etc.
In any team there are members who are different from one another based upon the skill set, the nature
of expertise and nature of responsibility within the group or differences in their roles,
different ways of going about the same work assigned or ways of understanding and
learning. The diversity can also be related to the level of skill set acquired by individuals
within a team. When any team manager hires candidates for his\her team, they always

the overall working environment. Ideas can be executed in a better manner if we have people
from diverse backgrounds who bring in their knowledge and unique way of handling issues to
the workplace. This increases productivity because many minds together give a better output
than one. Collaboration is the way towards organizational success.
2) Better pool of skills in every sphere- IF we try and nurture diverse skills based upon the kind,
level of expertise and exposure, it would help us in fostering a better equipped team internally.
Hiring experts is of prime importance but beginners with zeal to learn can also add a lot of value
to the team. It should ideally be a mix of all those who are experienced, just beginners or
somewhere near the intermediately levels.

Diversity is defined as “people from differing age groups, genders, ethnic and racial backgrounds, cultural and national origins, and mental and physical capabilities.” (Plunkett, Allen, Attner, 2013).
According to McCormick (2007), the first form of workplace diversity happened in 1948, when President Truman approved Executive Order 9981 whose main purpose was to advance equal treatment and opportuities in the armed forces. Therefore, scholars cite it as the origin of workplace diversity because President Truman the committee tasked to implement the executive order, used it to pursue desegregation in the armed forces. In the business world, many companies long held the belief that the assimiltion of new recruits in an organization required their socialization to adapt to the organization’s existent culture. However, over the last few decades, business organizations have realized that because of various reasons, the orgnizational culture must conform if it must attract and maintain a competitive workforce. This change has been steered by variety of workplace diversity initiatives. Despite the proliferation of such initiatives, the term “workplace diversity” is virtually never defined. Many attempts at defining the term are often in a circular or conclusory manner that does little to strengthen a collective understanding of this term.

There are two categories of Dimension of Diversity as shown in Figure 1 below. The first category is in the inner circle which is called primary dimension. It is inborn difference which will impact a person throughout his or her life. The outer circle is the second category called secondary dimension.
