In the twenty-first century, there is an ongoing debate centrally concerned with human trafficking and whether or not it should be categorized as form of slavery. Some downplay the danger of trafficking because they do not see the visible effects of it in today’s society. In reality, human trafficking has become a growing black market business and one of the top three organized crimes in the world. If not rescued, trafficked victims are sold at these black markets and subjected to cruel living conditions for their entire life. All of these characteristics of trafficking directly correlate with the core values of slavery. As a result, human trafficking should be categorized as a form of modern-day slavery.
One reason that human trafficking should be considered modern-day slavery is that it is a human rights violation against women and children all around the world. In the article, "Human Trafficking: Modern Day Slavery in the 21st Century”, the author Shadan Mohajerin elaborates on how human trafficking is a hazardous concern for women and children worldwide. In Doreen Marchionni’s article “International human trafficking: An agenda-building analysis of the US and British press,” the author states that “women and girls [are] sold into domestic slavery for middle-class families. Children [are] sold to work as slaves in fields in an ever-increasing globalized economy that demands cheap labor” (146). The author is using statistics to point out that people are being forced into slavery and inexpensive labor around the globe. Trafficked victims, like slaves, have no control in what happens to them.
