How Much Sleep Do We Really Need

Around 80% of average American adults do not sleep the minimum required hours of sleep a night. It is important for everyone’s mental and physical health to know how much sleep we need a night, and to get enough sleep each night. Lack of sleep will cause severe health problems and effect everyday mental functions. We grow at the fastest rate when we are in out teenage years that said, teenagers need more sleep than any other age, for there body and mind to grow efficiently. The only way humans can function is by sleeping.
Teenagers need a lot of sleep because they are at the peak of growing. UCLA health and sleep center states that “teens are at an important stage of their growth and development. Because of this they need more sleep than adults. The average teen needs about nine hours of sleep each night to feel alert and well rested”. This means teenagers beat the average number adults need by two hours. While teenager grow a lot physically teenagers also go through a lot of growth mentally because of school, research shows school can really effect how much teenagers sleep because “ Most schools start class very early in the morning. After a long day at school, teens may also have to study for hours at home. An early start and a lot of homework can combine to make it hard for them to get to sleep on time (sleep and teens).”This means that making teenagers get up very early every morning and work for hours effects their sleep schedule and cut of the valuable sleep teenagers need. Making sure teenagers get enough sleep is important and is beneficial to everyone.

Humans function by sleeping and getting rest every day. By getting the rest all humans need we remain healthy and have less mental and physical risks. Teenagers will grow more efficiently in school when they get a lot of sleep each night. Also we can prevent car crashes and protect the people around us when we make sure we get enough sleep and do not drive when we are drowsy or tired. Taking naps can effect our sleep at night if we take naps to often but when you feel really tired and you take a short nap it can make you feel better and more functional during the day. Your more at risks or heart problems stroke and other health issues when you are deprived of sleep. Sleeping also makes you more prone to focus and attention, which makes you more successful in school or at work. Sleep is important to every human and it helps us perform the best we can everyday.
