Many children aren’t as lucky as others; some face depression, others face abuse. When a child is born no one ever thinks about the problems their child might have in the future; all they care about is acknowledging the beautiful human being they brought into the world. In To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee, Jem and Scout face certain criticism based on the actions of their father, this has an impact on Jem and Scout throughout the book allowing them to grow and to be aware of the things that happen around them. Children are shaped by the choices made around them.
Jem and Scout are being criticized, due to Atticus's choice of defending a black man. When Francis brought up the fact that Atticus was bringing shame to the family Scout didn't understand until Francis said “ain't your fault uncle Atticus is a nigger lover” ( Lee pg.110) This confused Scout she didn't understand how her father could be a nigger lover, to her he was just defending a man. Mayella had siblings just like other kids such as Jem and Scout. She had a father just like Jem and Scout did but she wasn't being treated as Jem and Scout were. She was being abused physically, emotionally and perhaps sexualy. Most children who are abused are reminded of the lie that they're not worth it or less than others. When atticus was brought up to question Mayella he greeted her with respect. When he was done greeting her, Mayella took the greeting as an insult, afterwards Judge Taylor said, “ Mr. Finch is not making fun of you.. ” (Lee pg. 243) Mayella was never shown that she was a lady and was suppose to be treated with respect and kindness. She probably didn’t know the meaning of being called Ma’am and how it was an act of respect rather than an act of disrespect or
