In this paper I will discuss the results I found on How media affects socialization about gender roles. The way the media affects gender socialization is by showering individuals with ideas and images of what men and women are supposed to act and be in society. Since there are several types of media in today’s world breaking down each media source and how they have an affect on gender socialization. To name the different types of media that I will be talking about throughout this paper is print media, which consists of newspaper and magazines, electronic media, which consists of different type of things that viewed on television, video games, and radio. I will also discuss which one of these medias has the biggest impact on gender roles in
Sex and Gender was the subject of the two movies Dreamworlds 3 and Further Off The Straight & Narrow. In Dreamworlds 3 Sex is portrayed as a status of life and happiness in the media. This media displays people as objects that can be manipulated for sexual pleasure. As the media is populated with sex it tiptoes around gender, specifically that of gays or lesbians. The film Further Off The Straight & Narrow emphasized the movement through media gay and lesbian topics. This text analyzes iconic television programs and how they reflect the societal stance during that time. As a member of a generation that has had the topic of these issues prominent I believe they are important but are banal. In this reflection I will be responding to two questions, what would woman driven Dreamworlds look like? And Do you agree with the statement that if you are not on television you don’t exist?
The media, through its many outlets, has a lasting effect on the values and social structure evident in modern day society. Television, in particular, has the ability to influence the social structure of society with its subjective content. As Dwight E. Brooks and Lisa P. Hébert write in their article, “GENDER, RACE, AND MEDIA REPRESENTATION”, the basis of our accepted social identities is heavily controlled by the media we consume. One of the social identities that is heavily influenced is gender: Brooks and Hébert conclude, “While sex differences are rooted in biology, how we come to understand and perform gender is based on culture” (Brooks, Hébert 297). With gender being shaped so profusely by our culture, it is important to be aware of how social identities, such as gender, are being constructed in the media.
Gender in mass media has a stereotypical yet influential role towards teens. Teenagers use social media diverse methods depending on their gender. Males and females not only use the media for networking, but also for reasons that aren’t so stereotypical. Girls and boys compared by underrepresentation and overrepresentation regarding media. A primary way in which media distort reality is in underrepresenting women. As said by Julia T. Wood, “this constant distortion tempts us to believe that there really are more men than women and, further, that men are the cultural standard. In general, media continue to present both women and men in stereotyped ways that limit our perceptions of human possibilities.” As media change our lives, the ways they misrepresent genders may distort how we see ourselves and what we perceive as normal and desirable for men and women.
Gender Roles. A hot button topic that has become a topic of conversation for years now. When we think of Gender roles what things come to mind? With Men we often think of qualities such as strength, toughness, bravery, and masculinity and being a Husband. With Women we often think of characteristics such as: care taker, Wife, nurturing, cooking/ cleaning, and often very supportive. But another big question that we should be asking ourselves is where and how these gender roles and stereotypes have come from? Both men and women’s thinking process are being altered the negative effects of society’s mass media. For both sexes, this repeating negative exposure causes a constant downfall in self-image and creates media influenced decisions that lead to unhealthy lifestyles. Messages coming from media stick over time resulting into negative effects on society and creating the stereotypes, for instant men seen as primarily sex-driven and women are objects of men desires (Bogt, 2009). Over the years, television has transform a diffusion of messages that stereotype and objectify women by presenting them passive and dependent on men and mainly related to their bodies (Galdi et al, 2014). It created an image of what "masculinity" or "femininity" should be like and this leads to the image being "naturalized" in a way (Gail and Humez 2014). Another major factor that influences millions of impressionable females and males is television. Not only does the television teach each sex how to act, it also shows how one sex should expect the other sex to act. In the current television broadcasting, stereotypical behavior goes from programming for the very small to adult audiences.
