Homework has been an everyday affair for teens throughout America for as long as most can remember. When a teen goes to school they expect to go home with hours of work to be completed at home. While homework may seem harmless, it can cause catastrophic amounts of stress on teenagers and can take away time needed to develop nonacademic skills. The negative effects of a overload of homework is enough to think about regulating how much homework can be allocated to students in a night. The impact that homework has on teenagers emotional and physical health is enough to make people wonder if teens are being pushed too far. Emotional effects include stress, a lack of balance in life, and isolation from society. The National Education Society recommends no more than 10 minutes of homework per grade level. However, it is apparent that most children are given more than this recommended amount a night. Going over this limit just further escalates the amount of stress on students. When given copious amounts of homework students are stuck choosing between their grades and their family, and the former usually wins. Students feel obligated to complete their homework before anything else. People often complain about the child obesity epidemic in America. However, no change can occur if students are stuck inside doing their homework until the sun sets. Additionally, if students focus all of their time on completing homework, they have no time to develop creative, intellectual, and physical skills needed to grow into a well-rounded adult. Time which should be used for other activities is taken away by the mountains of homework given to students
