What Is the Glass Ceiling? Some may think that the glass ceiling is actually a ceiling made of glass. Although it is an interesting thought it is much more than that. “The term was originally coined by Hymowitz and Schellhardt in a Wall Street Journal report in 1986 to represent the barriers that women who attempted and aspired to senior management positions faced” (Lockwood 2004). The glass ceiling is an intangible barrier that makes it near impossible for women and those of ethnicities, other than Caucasian, from a achieving a job of high corporate status. Think about it. How many men do you see running businesses compared to women and other ethnicities? The glass ceiling has been about for years, and runs rampant across our country affecting the lives of millions of Americans. …show more content…

For example, say that two people, a man and a woman, with the same amount of experience on the job are competing for a huge promotion. In many cases, the man will get the job. Although, many women have tried to “break” the glass ceiling they have not yet succeeded. Some have taken the matter to court, but could not clearly show any sign of sexism, or unjustness. This is due to the fact that the employer can simply say that the other applicant was better suited for the job. To put it simply the glass ceiling is one of the most prominent forms of sexism, and prejudice in the workplace. Although, rights of women, and minorities have become much more plentiful in our nation we, as Americans, still have these quite obvious showings of unjustness in the workplace. Though the glass ceiling is obvious there is not much anyone can do it about it because of the lack of proof pointing toward the unfair bias when promoting and paying
