What is the American dream? The American Dream is the reason why people live and come to America. In F. Scott Fitzgerald’s “The Great Gatsby” the novel is all about the American dream. Fitzgerald expresses the American dream with the terms “old money” and “new money”. Old money meaning you were born rich, while new money means you became rich on your own. Throughout the story there are many difficulties and benefits of living in America where society is all about money. Fitzgerald’s uses a variety of literary devices to portray the American dream. One example of that would be the Valley of Ashes. In Chapter 2 it says, “This is a valley of ashes—a fantastic farm where ashes grow like wheat into ridges and hills and grotesque gardens; where ashes take the forms of houses and chimneys and rising smoke and, finally, with a transcendent effort, of men who move dimly and already crumbling through the powdery air.” This quote describes how wealth and money could get to people’s heads. He literally dies at the end of the novel because he pursued the American dream. The cost of the American dream was his life. In many cases of people, their goal is to be wealthy and have a happy family. In Chapter 6 it says, “To the young Gatz, resting on his oars and looking up at the railed deck, the yacht represented all the beauty and glamour in the world.” In this quote, Gatsby realized he would do anything to become a millionaire. He knew at this point that he wanted to live like a rich man. I think this was when he would do anything to pursue the American dream.
