In the year 2015 2,996 people were shot & wounded, 447 people were shot and killed due to gang related shootings in Chicago. Gang Violence is a burden on us because it destroys communities, it makes people feel unsafe, and people start to move out the community. Gang violence happens because two gang are at war with each other. The community gets torn apart, the population decreases, and people are heartbroken when lives are lost. Did you know that in 2015 at Chicago a person is shot every 2 minutes and 55 seconds, and a person is killed every 17 hours and 29 minutes. Isn’t that mind blowing?

I asked the man why he joined a gang. He gave me a short story about how when he was younger he would get picked on. His family moved, so he didn't want to get at his new school so he joined a gang. He continued to say, “I became a bully myself, I didn't bully kids I bullied others and rival gang members and people he didn't like.” Next question I asked him was, “How can you tell if someone is in a gang. He responded by saying, “It really hard nowadays, back in the days you could tell if they in a gang if they wear a solid colors for example all blue for crips, if they hat is tilted a certain way, and how they walk, and if they wore a certain accessory. But what I look to see if someone is in a gang if they wear a particular color a lot, any tattoo of numbers, letters or symbols.” For example the Mexican Mafia. M is the 13 number is the alphabet so someone would tattoo the letter M or the number thirteen if they are in that gang. Another example is the Vice Lords. If you see someone with a five pointed star tattooed anywhere that might mean they’re in a gang. After that I asked Pete “Why gangs fight each other or have war?” I found out they fight over petty things like girls, turf or neighborhoods, customers,and drugs.
