Though there are many other promising students, I know that I stand apart do to my work ethic and good character. These I have picked up from my parents who are both very motivated and hard working; especially my father and his family. For example, my father starting working when he was twelve, behind a residential garbage truck. Now, even in his 40s, he works 80-hour weeks just like his father before him. He does this to support my large family and put food on the table for us. We have a long-standing tradition of hard-working, industrious men, and I believe that these are models from which I first learnt hard work. I choose to follow this example and teach it to my
“When schools, parents, families, and communities work together to support learning, students tend to earn higher grades, attend school more regularly, stay in school longer, and enroll in higher level programs.” (Van Roeckel, 2008, p. 1) Deer Valley High School in Glendale, AZ is the first high school built in the Deer Valley Unified Scholl District, and with a population around 1800 students, the high school is one of the bigger schools in the state. It has a tradition of family on its’ campus, where there are still teachers teaching that were there when the school opened in 1980. A number of former students have become new teachers on campus and just about all the teachers’ children have attended and graduated from the campus. With a school like ours, there are many connections to the community around it and it is demonstrated by the programs that bring in parent and community to help with the development of our students. There are numerous booster clubs run on our campus to help support student achievement on the sports fields, a school to work programs to teach the students necessary skills in different areas of either nursing, sports medicine classes, and in the culinary arts classrooms, and funding to our school to help ensure all students graduate on time. There are many programs on our campus, but I will discuss four of the programs: baseball booster club, C2G program, “school-to-work”, and the special education program sponsored by Arrowhead Hospital. These programs are designed to improve the relationships between the campus and the people in the community, and give all students on campus every opportunity to succeed in their future.
In ninth grade, I began to participate in my school’s Young Life ministry program and soon started volunteering as student leader to increase my efforts to reach out and love others at my school. As a student leader, I have helped lead small group, been a campaigner for bible studies, and have gone to Young Life’s camp at Lake Champion to help lead the younger students. Through my words of encouragement and actions to put my friends first, I have absolutely loved seeing the joy and excitement that they have experienced through Young

“Never underestimate your own strength. You were born for a purpose and are blessed with the power to achieve it” (Leon Brown). I have this quote printed out and on the wall next to my door so I can see it every day as a reminder to myself. I believe that we all have a purpose on this earth and that everything we go through on the journey there has a reason whether to teach a lesson or set an example. We have places where we want to end up and goals we want to achieve. We set these goals and dreams to help us fulfill the purpose we see for ourselves. I believe my purpose is to help people in their times of need. To fulfill my purpose, I will need to use my personal, academic and career goals to create a pathway to get to where I want to be
I have known from an early age that I’ve wanted to become a doctor. Helping people has always been a passion of mine. When I was younger, I wanted to be a veterinarian. However, after working with young children I have found that I love working with them, and have a connection with children. Currently, I am interested in becoming either a neonatologist or a general pediatrician so I can continue to work with young children.
As a future university student dedicated to learning and discussing as much as I can, the Honors College has been my goal since I decided to attend Alabama. Because of my intense interest in academic discussion, literature, and rhetoric, I intend to become an English teacher with my degree. I feel strongly compelled because of my intended career path to receive the most complete and thorough education to which I have access. One of the main benefits of know I wanted to be a teacher for so many years is the opportunity I have had as a student to observe others. Teaching is the one profession that young people see most regularly, and this process of being educated in the same field I wish to work has given me time to contemplate what makes a
“The future is coming no matter how hard we try to stop it…The only thing we can do is work hard and strive for the best future possible”(Acheson). Employers are becoming more selective when it comes to choosing employees. There are diminishing job opportunities that comes from outsourcing because of cheap labor and infrastructure. All of these factors make the prospect of finding a future job more difficult. In order to improve my chances of finding a successful job, I am directing all of my efforts to my current high school classes and extra circular activities to enhance my capabilities in the field of engineering. My goals for the future are to provide a comfortable future for myself, my future family, and as well as my current family.
During my time as a Psychology undergraduate student at San Francisco State University (SFSU), I was exposed to many different perspectives in the field, and it made me realize that I wanted to pursue a career researching cognition and the workings of the brain. I was recently accepted into the MBB Master’s in Psychology program at SFSU. I chose to focus on a master’s degree prior to pursuing a doctorate, because I believe that gaining as much experience as I can early on, will allow me to build a strong foundation upon which I will be able to get the most out of a doctoral program. Getting a master’s degree would also prepare me to better deal with obstacles that I will inevitably face while pursuing my career.
I’ve worked to achieve a higher education based on my values and personal standards. Equally, if not more importantly, I desire for my son to see his potential because I realize in the long-term, who I am and what I do has far more influence than a teacher or school ever will. My home life, academic pursuits, and work have been a balancing act. What has tilted the scale for me are perseverance, tenacity, and cogency.
My professional career goal is to develop and explore innovative research that targets increased energy efficiency and sustainability through improved catalytic materials. While I have no doubt that I want to pursue a research career in this field, I have often viewed the question of why as quite daunting. However, I have come to realize that my primary motivators can be distinctly defined: the prospect of doing something that no person has achieved, an appreciation for the frequently challenging efforts that a successful research project necessitates, and the potential to have meaningful and widespread impact through societal outreach.
In lieu of being successful in my internship this semester, having an idea of long term career goals will help shape my attitudes and the outcomes I expect to get from my experience. After completing my undergraduate degree, I plan to work for a non-profit organization that focuses on substance abuse or sexual health. I am open to any other topics, but those are the ones I have been more actively involved in throughout my experience and studies. Starting off with a small organization will allow me to be more involved and active within my workplace. Working with a small to medium sized staff I would be expected to have more responsibility for projects, providing me with more skills and chances to be creative.I would like to work in the health education and promotion area. I am looking forward to learning about research and policy from this semester and I am hoping to exert those skills as I further my career. I want to be with
My parents, who migrated to the United States from Nigeria, dream of a brighter future for me and my siblings. To fulfill this dream, they sacrificed luxuries of life so that my siblings and I could attend a parochial school. For this reason, I have always done my best to take advantage of every opportunity that comes my way, especially by excelling academically. This goal to maintain my academic excellence is the reason why I am determined to work diligently in UAB’s College of Arts and Sciences and beyond. In order to prepare for my future, I have set various short and long term goals.
