Film Analysis: Factory Garment Workers

1. Before watching this film, I was unaware that there were still working conditions for factory garment workers that were the same conditions as the sweat shop workers had back before there were labor laws. I believe that this is the same unawareness that most of the public has when it comes to who is making their clothing. I could not believe that the garment worker was getting paid just cents for each clothing item they produced, but then the store was able to mark up the price of the clothing and make huge profits. This population is at a disadvantage in the medical system as well, especially if they are undocumented workers, that getting hurt or sick could be very detrimental not only to that if the individual, but also to their family who is relying in them. The garment workers in this film were able to throw down their dignity just to maintain a job so that they could survive. The allies who participated in their effort to create signs, posters, and stand out on the street and yell, even when they really didn’t want to, or couldn’t. The combined voices of the people became loud enough that the court system had to listen to their claim. Another concept that I find relevant from our textbook is the Bronfenbrenner’s ecological model. This is relevant because it takes into account the multiple layers that exits within an individual’s life, and the factors that contribute to that individual’s success, or failure, when these systems do not function together. It is found on page 147 of our textbook. Using this model as a frame of reference, I would be able to increase the empathy and compassion about the realities of the 11 million people in the US who do not have documents, by increasing their knowledge in the complexities of the microsystem and how the relationships among those directly living together impact each other, and how the mesosystem affects the individual in their work, and in their classes at school, but that the school functions within the exosystem, and if that is negatively affecting an individual because of their inclusion in one or more of the groups from within the Big 8 of Diversity, because of negative stereotypes and discrimination in the macrosystem, then I can easily explain how it all trickles down through the
