1) In the Disney animated movie of “Hercules” (1997), there is one prominent female role. The female character is Megara. Megara is an independent strong female character in my opinion. But sometimes she plays the part of damsel in distress. Megara is a beautiful female with a sarcastic, non-caring attitude. Broken hearted in her past by a previous relationship that didn’t end well. She is willing to do anything for her freedom from Hades. At the beginning she is a slave of Hades, trying to recruit monsters to fight along him against Zeus. But when she meets Hercules, Hades orders her to keep watch on Hercules, trying to deceive him. Later on, she becomes a spy of Hades, and tries to seduce Hercules to find out his weakness. Firstly, the idea of beauty and the perfect body, by how she was created. It might teach girls that in order to get a man you must be physically beautiful and have a seductive appearance. Also, by viewing her actions viewers, mostly girls, might perceive that women are always dependent on men. Therefore, women try to act as the damsel in distress, waiting for a guy to save them. Another, thing viewers can be taught is that women are considered as objects. Megara was controlled and owed by Hades. Then, she was treated again as an object in a bargain between Hades and Hercules. Men may think that in order to get female attention, they have to be extremely handsome and as well as physically strong. I feel as if it’s recommending to men to get in shape, in order to be adored by women. Also, he demonstrates to never give up until he gets what he wants. For example, trying to persuade Phil (his trainer), to make him a hero. But also romantically, that being persistent will get the girl eventually. Which he shows his persistence often with Megara in some of the scenes. One of the most prominent is seeking for society’s approval, to be liked. To go from a nobody to somebody. As one of the songs in the movie says, “From a Zero to Hero.” 5) Hercules shows being a nice caring guy, that seeks society’s acceptance and his father’s approval. What people think of him affect his mood and attitude. He is the type of guy that most girls would want. Head over heels in love, sacrificed his strength and power for the girl. Then, he risked his life to rescue Megara’s soul from the underworld, since she died temporarily. He gave up everything for love.
