The three theorectical perpectives in sociology are symbolic interactionism, conflict theory and functional analysis. Symbolic interactionism are symbols that we use to define our relationships with people in society. It can refer to our parents, friends, siblings, employees, teachers, and so forth. These symbols will help us to determine our behavior towards an individual and how we treat them. For example, the way we communicate with our friends will be different from how we talk to our teachers because we are aware that our relationship with our teacher is professional and our relationship with our friends is personal. Sociology is the study of society and the interactions that occur within society itself. There are numerous methods of analyzing societies and the way the function, nonetheless, most methods fall in micro and macro level theories. Micro level theories allow sociologist to study smaller relationships such as individual or compact groups of people. On the other hand, macro level studies permit for larger scale investigations to take place. With both of these theories there are three theoretical perspectives used in sociology. Micro level theories include symbolic interactionism which focuses in interactions done with language and gestures and the means which allow such interactions to take place. The main points of the Symbolic Interactionism perspective is that symbols are what shape how we communicate and how we view the world. Our changing ideas affect how we understand and view different things around us. Without symbols society would be not be very coordinated, people wouldn’t be able to specify a specific time for school or where to meet for lunch. One of the sociological theories is conflict theory. The conflict theory deals with people's level on wealth, or class. The conflict theory says that social change is beneficial, contrary to focuses on social order. In the story of the woman and her children, the conflict theory plays a big role on the situation. Police of higher class are threatening the homeless woman. The conflict theory is a constant struggle of people of higher class over powering people of lower class, or the weaker. The police are trying to over power the woman by telling her to leave. Even though the woman and her children were doing nothing wrong, the police used their power to tell her to leave. Also the people of the area showed their conflict theory by telling the police officers to come. They must have felt embarrassed to have a woman of such lower class to be around them. They used their power of class to have the woman removed from their community. The woman wants to be there because she has no home and it is a good community to be in, but the people look at it as an embarrassment to them because it makes their area look bad for someone of such lower class to be around them. The conflict theory is unique to all other theories because it separates people into categories determined by their wealth and standards. Their status is the element that categorizes them, weather it is class, race, or gender. The conflict theory do not always use class, race, and gender all at once. When studying in the field of Sociology everyone is going to approach topics in a different manner. No two people are going to have the exact same view on a particular subject. There are however, three major categories in which people might choose to approach topics. The approaches are know as sociological perspectives and are the functionalist, conflict, and interactionist perspectives. These perspectives name different ways in which different people choose to analyze a subject, and how they look at a society as a whole. The following paragraphs compare and contrast the three, and identify major characteristics of each.
We watched a film and we had an activity afterwards, I was assigned to relate a certain scenario from the film to structural functionalism. That was time I panicked because I didn’t know what it means. Luckily, one of my classmates told me what was it all about and I got it fast. For me, structural functionalism is all about the vital roles of the people, institutions, and other involved in making the society better. Basically, it’s about working together to develop and improve our state. In line with that topic is Symbolic Interactionalism, which for me means giving meaning to something that is meaningless. like, we are looking at a thing and we try to analyze what it does and what it means. To put it another way, digging deeper and deeper. In short, this is to understand the behavior of an individual towards a certain situation. Also, it is synonymous to stereotyping. Moreover, conflict theory is related to these two topics above because it also deals with actions but in different terms. based on my own understanding, Conflict theory states that the society won’t be in its progressive state if conflict will not interfere. In simpler terms, society can’t always be on the positive side. There should be a negative side so that there’s equilibrium. There can’t be good if there’s no bad. In sociology we have learned about the three major sociological perspectives which are; symbolic interactionism, functionalism, or conflict theory. Conflict theory is my favorite topic that I learned about this year. Conflict theory was founded by Karl Marx that claims society is in a state of perpetual conflict due to competition for limited resources. Conflict theory holds that social order is maintained by domination and power, rather than consensus and conformity. The main elements in social conflict are that society is created in ways to benefit the higher class, and factors such as race, sex, class, and age are likely to experience social inequality. To a social conflict theorist, it is all about dominant group vs. minority group relations. Karl Marx is considered the 'father ' of social conflict theory. The movie “The Hunger Games” shows many examples of social conflict throughout the whole movie.
The three major sociological paradigms are conflict, functionalist, symbolic interactionism. The Conflict Theory states that issues such as race, gender, social class, criminal justice, and international relations is a macro orientation because it studies how the struggle for resources embraces society together(Pg.60 Think Sociology). A paradigm is a theoretical framework through which scientists study the world (Pg. 6 Think Sociology). Functionalism views society as a system of interrelated parts is a macro orientation because it studies exactly how social structures affect how a society works (Pg.60). The third paradigm is the symbolic interactionism, believes the root of society comes from its symbols society is fluid, meaning it is constantly in the process of change because the symbols we use and their interpretations change. Sociologists view society in different ways. Sociologists use three major theories: symbolic interactionism, functional analysis, and conflict theory. The symbolic interactionist perspective, also known as symbolic interactionism, directs sociologists to consider the symbols and details of everyday life, what these symbols mean, and how people interact with each other (Cliff). Some examples of symbolic interactionism are the meaning of marriage, the meaning of divorce, the meaning of parenthood, and the meaning of love. Symbols may include wedding bands, vows of life‐long commitment, a white bridal dress, a wedding cake, a Church ceremony, and flowers and music. American society attaches general meanings to these symbols, but individuals also maintain their own perceptions of what these and other symbols mean (Cliff). Symbols have a shared social meaning that is understood by all members of society. Symbolical interactionism is analyzed at a micro-sociological level. It examines small-scale patterns of social interaction. It focuses mainly on face-to-face interaction and how people use symbols to create a social life.
There are three main types of sociological perspectives in which you can perceive different sociological issues and concepts; structural-functional, symbolic-interaction, and social conflict. Structural-functional looks at society as a whole and how it works together. Symbolic-interaction is how different symbols spark particular thoughts and emotions by examining the meanings that people impose on objects, events and behaviors. Social conflict studies how power and coercion affect social order. Based off these types of perspectives, an analysis on teen depression and suicide can be evaluated from a sociological standpoint.
Sociologists have many different lenses they can view society's problems from. Early sociologists view problems from the macro level. The two broader views are functionalism and the conflict perspective. Functionalist sociologists believe that society has institutions, rules guide society, and society functions with organization. The conflict perspective looks at social events and how class structure and levels of wealth impact the event and this theory believes social change is possible through revolution. A later theory was developed to look at events at a micro level and that theory is symbolic interactionism. According to symbolic interactionism, and the basis of this theory is that society places value on certain symbols and objects.
To help guide sociologists in observance of the social world, three major sociological perspectives on social order are used. These are noted and defined as: structural-functionalist perspective, the conflict perspective, and symbolic interactionist perspective. Each perspective has a specific view of society and what holds a society together, therefore producing a different outlook on the assigned topic of interest.
