Peaceful Resistance to Laws Mohandas Gandhi once said, “An unjust law is itself a species of violence. Arrest for its breach is more so. Now the law of nonviolence says that violence should be resisted not by counter-violence but by nonviolence. This I do by breaking the law and by peacefully submitting to arrest and imprisonment.” This quote explains the meaning of peaceful resistance or civil disobedience. Civil disobedience is the act of disobeying an unjust law or action while accepting the consequences. Although resistance results in serious consequences, it settles peace among people and their outsiders. After success, freedom can be accomplished with the help of the government. For example, when during the Boston Tea Party, colonists invaded British ships and trashed their tea into the Boston harbor. The colonists formed protest groups and refused to pay for the tea. Colonists boycotted British taxation and rebelled against British rule. In addition, the British Parliament passed the Intolerable Acts to punish the colonists in response for the Boston Tea Party, so colonists led a revolution to end British domination of the American colonies. The Intolerable Acts angered the colonists and limited their freedom. Instead of accepting punishment, the colonists and the British clashed in a revolution for the rights of Americans. In briefly, the Boston Tea Party and the Intolerable Acts were events that led to the revolution between the colonies and Great Britain due to taxation and British authority that made life in the colonies
