Discrimination is defined as ¨the unjust or prejudicial treatment of different categories of people or things, especially on the grounds of race, age, or sex.¨ 1863 was the year the slaves were finally freed, but that doesn't mean they weren't discriminated for more than a 100 year after that and even to this day there is still discrimination toward African Americans. Women of any race didn't even get the right to vote until August 18, 1920. Which was not quickly won, women had to fight for nearly 100 years previous to acquire a right that all should have. To this day women have reported making less than men for doing the same exact job. A group of young girls in Salem, Massachusetts, claimed to be possessed by the devil and accused several local women of witchcraft. The women were the main targets of this for women at the time had little voice and if a man said that a woman was possessed then that woman was. Another instance of discrimination was at Tituba, Abby had blamed her because she knew no one would believe Tituba for she was black and a slave so if she didnt go with what Abby said no one would believe her and she would be hung. The dominant form of discrimination in The Crucible appeared to be more about gender where as the dominant form in A Lesson Before Dying was racial. There were forms of gender, and racial discrimination in both stories though. In The Crucible you can see some racism in the fact that Abigail Williams manipulated Tituba into taking her and the rest of the girls out into the woods and dancing then the Abigail says it was all Tituba's idea and of course she was believed. Then in A Lesson Before Dying Emma and Tante Lou say that Grant must teach Jefferson to die “like a man, not a hog.” This implies a Women can’t raise a boy into a man all by herself that it takes a mans help to accomplish this
