Anti-Sport Discrimination with Female Athletes
Female athletes are discriminated against when performing in the male-dominated athletic world and receive unequal benefits due to their gender. Title IX, founded in 1972, has increased educational athletic opportunities for female athletes by enforcing the law that all educational programs funded by the federal government must provide gender equality (Issitt 1). Although female athletes often receive lower sponsorships and audiences than male athletes, they deserve equal opportunities through programming, scholarships, and participation at the collegiate level.

As there was becoming an increase in a number of athletic scholarships there was also a greater number of female college athletes. According to the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA), “Women have also increased their representation in collegiate athletics, from 74,000 in 1982 to more than 193,000 in 2011”. While there has been a significant increase in female athletes, they still do not compare with their counterparts. College athletics provide greater funding for male-dominated athletics, resulting in an unequal balance of scholarships between males and females. Female college athletes receive $183 million less in NCAA athletic scholarships (Issitt 1). Lower funding of scholarships results that some athletes do not attend college due to the financial burden, even if they have a strong athletic history. Women may also choose to work to afford college when scholarships would have allowed them the funds to play. Women often experience inequality in obtaining scholarship assistance based on athletic merit. Being involved with sports promotes greater academic success in which NCAA schools graduate at higher rates (“Battle for Gender Equity” 2). Due to the lack of scholarship funds, it makes the academic and athletic success of females less than that of males.
