Have you ever wondered what life would be like as if there were no education at all? What about a college education? Though some think that college is a waste of time, I find it rather helpful in multiple ways. There are some way in which college is important to me, time management, success after college, and the mental affects going to college can have.
Time management is crucial in day-to-day living, especially when you’re going to school. But how much of that time would be wasted if there were no education. We as a human race would probably just sit around twiddling our thumbs all day. According to collegeparents.com the average student spends roughly thirty hours of studying and fifteen hours of actual class time. That is the equivalent to having a full time job. According to sidelineguides.com “The percentage of colleges that rated having good grades considerably important plummeted from 42% in 1993 to a mere 13% in 2012”. That meaning, if you don’t have good grade then a(n) education at a(n) university is not as likely. But just because your grades aren’t the best doesn’t mean that you might as well not go to college. For the past few months I have been attending college as a first year, but recently I have started to ask myself is college really worth it? Or is there a better alternative other than going on the traditional path to college? Furthermore if there are alternative path instead of attending college, why aren’t we taking them? In many situations we do have the option of acquiring special licenses and certifications that can get us the careers we desire, but without the need to attend college, but if we can do things like getting licenses and certificates then why do most of us choose to go to college knowing that there is a better option? Honestly college at this certain point in time does not seem worth it. Everywhere else in the world college is free but the United States. People would feel more motivated to go to college if it was free. College is the main reason Americans are having to live such a hard lifestyle. My father did not go to college and makes eighteen dollars an hour. On the other hand my aunt did go to college and make twenty-four dollars an hour but is still paying back student loans so after paying all of her stuff back she only makes around fifteen dollars an hour that she gets to bring back and that doesn’t include taxes. That’s the reason college doesn’t seem like a good choice to make in life.
First of all, many high school graduates cannot handle college. Isabel V. Sawhill and Stephanie Owen describe college as a place, “one can obtain a traditional four-year bachelor’s degree”. The work load outside of the classroom could be compared to working a full time job. For example, if a student is enrolled in four college courses and is in class a minimum of four hours the student should spend at least four to six hours of studying. College was once seen as the only way to better your life, and immensely increase your income. But now that is all the past. Caroline Bird states in her narrative “College Is a Waste of Time and Money” that “A great majority of our nine million college students are not in school because they want to be or because they want to learn” (Pg. 373). Sadly the author has a good point, and goes into detail what makes college, so obsolete in our day and time. In particular Caroline Bird mentions that students nowadays see college as something sad and depressing. She then goes on saying that most kids go to college to please their parents, or a way to get away from intolerable home situations. Later stating, “The decision not to attend college for fear that it’s a bad deal is among the most economically irrational decisions anybody could make in 2014.” I agree with Leonhardt 's claim, college is a smart choice, and fear or money should ncot stop you from attending.
