Education is a huge topic of controversy, society is always trying to reform what we know as education today. Right now, the first 12 years of education are entirely free for students directly, but in the end are paid for by the taxpayers of the town. The question is, why should only grades k-12 be free why not a college education too? On the other hand, there are some exceptions to free schooling at the k-12 levels. The most prominent being, Private schooling, most towns in the United States have at least one if not many private schools. They require a certain amount in tuition for each of its students every year. An example of this, in my town Salem, NH one of the most known private catholic schools is St. Joseph 's. A $60 billion plan is being invested by Barack Obama for two free years of community colleges for American citizens in order to help with financial need. That means Obama is trying to get community colleges to be free to students that need extra support as they are living or growing up in an unstable house. Yet, community colleges being free would cause problems for many students that do not belong there. Money then would be given to all the students that are attending a community college, even though some of the students do not need extra support, nor want to be there in the first place. By doing research, it shows that community colleges are affordable to those that put forth an effort and universities would be shied away due to the price
What if one day the tuition of your community college was to become free? If you couldn 't afford college would you go? That’s exactly what President Obama is trying to propose in his State of The Union speech on January 20th 2015. In his words he claims “to lower the cost of community college, to zero”. I am a community college student freshman at Frederick Community College. Being a community college student I value my education and feel if this new proposal is to be put in place there will be people who don’t want to be there just like high school. Community college is something that runs in my family as my two cousins have attended a junior college in the past. I am in my first year at community college and can say that it is a lot different from high school as far as the expectations and work load. People that only get their school diploma don’t make as much money as someone with a college degree. A study done suggest that people who have a college degree are more likely to get hired because they have an education compared to those who don’t. According to the United States Bureau people who achieved the current degrees earned the following median salaries. People with a doctorate degree earn $100,000 or more. With a bachelor’s degree people earn $58,000 and people with an associates earn $42,000 or more(Lucier). A High School diploma is not worth as much as a college degree. A High school diploma means less today because of the shaping of the world. People who only have a high school diploma earn only about $33,000. These numbers also depend on the type of field that you are going into. For example, people that have a bachelor’s degree in engineering or management will earn a little bit more (Lynn). Students who have to pay and work hard for their college will appreciate it more, college should not be free! There will not be enough money, students may get into the wrong crowd, and if they didn’t go to college, they wouldn’t have to waste their time, the teacher’s time, and everyone’s money. So the next time you get something easily, maybe you should think about how and why it came to you so easily, appreciate the things you have because nothing in life is free.
It is easy to think college is not worth the cost to become better, but getting educated molds a better person, and creates happier people in the future and occasionally they become better in health (Leonhardt 25 ). Becoming a better and happier person is pleasing for everyone. Even former President Obama says “‘Education helps us be better people. It helps us be better citizens. You came to college to learn about the world and to engage with new ideas and to discover the things you're passionate about -- and maybe have a little fun’” (Procon.org). Learning and engaging in everything is a skill everyone should have, so like he said we should go to college to be able to do that. Additionally, education shows people to develop more intellectual skill and become more responsible (Pew Social and Demographic Trends). Thus said, being educated and smart is something everyone can do and college helps with that. Likewise, college can encourage someone to be more educated and happier. Reaching the point of happier and more educated is worth the cost.
With higher education one is the more likely to make more money, hence making college worth it. A recent study from Georgetown University By Peter Osborn said, “On average, college graduates earn $1 million more in earnings over their lifetime.” Having a college education can be more prosperous because it ensures that your financial level stays the same, never wavering below what it should be. College graduates have a higher chance of having a long-term career. With that long-term career comes pay raises and bonus from their employers.
Many people believe that the value of college education is not worth the cost because, for many, a college education can incur a lot of college debt, and sometimes a person may end up unemployed or underemployed, thus making it even more difficult to pay off debt. Although a college education incurs a significant amount of debt, the benefits of a college degree are worth it. A college degree can ensure a person more money, job stability, and employee benefits.

College tuition will be the bane of certain student’s existence in the near future but it was not always this way. For quite a length of time, people did not pay much for their college degrees. However, in today’s day-of-age that is not nearly the case. A large portion of people are realizing that tuition is very unreasonable and want to change it to be more affordable. While researching college tuition I found not only that I was right about tuition being too high, but I also found that it has inflated more than I assumed it had. Since 1975 to now, tuition has increased by roughly four times the original amount at a four year university.
A college education is necessary today in society. Students can focus on their academics and try to get a high score. The cost of education for each student has become more difficult to afford. I give props to both of my sisters for going to college because it’s a hard thing to do. Tyler Cowen wrote an article for The New York Times called “Graduates’ Pay Is Slipping, but Still outpaces Others”. In this article, Cowen states really Valid Points. He starts the article by stating how people’s earnings have decreased. According to the article, “Even a cashier with a college degree makes more than a cashier without a college degree.” In other words, although some people may have degrees, as the years go by it seems that they’re becoming more and more worthless. A person with no Degree can have the same job as someone with a Degree. I find this statement to be true in most cases. I can use my sisters as an example. One has a degree and one doesn’t. However, they both had the same job which was working at a dermatology office. Honestly, Degrees are starting to become pointless because you can have a bachelor’s or master’s and still struggle to find a place to work, especially if it’s in your field. However, I don’t think this should stop someone from getting a degree. College is very important and it can get you places.
College education essentially is the key to success in the future. It opens many doors of opportunity and allows us to explore every option available. College education can provide a student with new exciting opportunities that they would never had if they drop out of at high school.
