Attending college provides life time benefits. However, the rising prices of tuition is making people second guess if college is worth going to. In the article “Is College Worth it? Clearly, new data say” Leonhardt claims the significance of going to college, and the advantages it holds. Later stating, “The decision not to attend college for fear that it’s a bad deal is among the most economically irrational decisions anybody could make in 2014.” I agree with Leonhardt 's claim, college is a smart choice, and fear or money should ncot stop you from attending. By going to college there are more job options, more opportunities, in the long run it saves you more money, and at the very least you have a degree to fall back on. Attending college is a economically smart thing to do because of the job options that arise with a degree. In other words, by going to college you increase your options. College can open up unexpected opportunities that aren’t always there for those who haven’t engaged in a higher level of education. Why should someone waste money when they can get a job instead and earn money. Kaufman claims , "Now, consider the cost of going to college. You risk taking on serious debt. You potentially take longer to develop the vital skills to be competitive in the world. You lose four years of building professional experience — and four years of earning money instead becomes four years of spending money". Going to college doesn 't have to turn into a giant pile of student debt. Plenty of people work and attend school at same time. Also, as previously mentioned education, is also more valuable than the price you pay for. It seem to be more expensive, but by attending you save money in the long run. There is a thin line of people who should and should not attend college. That is a huge decision that could either be the best decision they have ever made or it could be a costly mistake causing thousands of dollars of debt to pile up. There are reasons such as costly tuitions, unnecessary fees, no guarantee of a career, piling of debt, and questionable educational quality, that lead me to believe that college is not worth the money people pay for it.
Although most will be pushed to go to college some will choose to go out into the workforce immediately and that cannot be looked down upon because that is their decision and that is what they want to do, but with that in mind they must always consider college because in a lifetime it will more than likely be the wiser decision. One who takes the risk and tries to go to college might find out they want to be a biology teacher and not an astrophysicist and that is all due to college and all the experiences that it can bring along that have absolutely nothing to do with education but of broadening horizons and making one see different points of view. You don’t need a college degree to have a good paying job. Not attending college affects ones literacy of financial awareness, their ability to receive a job, and their ability to carry our responsibilities.
They go on to say, "While the average return to obtaining a college degree is clearly positive, we emphasize that it is not universally so. For certain schools, majors, occupations, and individuals, college may not be a smart investment." (page. 209 Para. 1). This applies more to older students rather than students who are fresh out of high school. One of the main reasons the return rate is greater is because most of these students who are already working need more education in order to further themselves in their workplace. The authors also add that "The main problem is one of selection: if the smartest, most motivated people are both more likely to go to college and more likely to be financially successful, then the observed difference in earning 's by years of education doesn 't measure the true effect of college." (Page 209, Para #2). This means students who do not take advantage of all that college has to offer are not really getting the full experience. Why not invest in four years and come out with the opportunity to make more money? Some students want to go ahead and get school out of the way. Furthering education accumulates lots of debt. The experience college can give is remarkable. College is a valuable experience because individuals who attend will have a lower chance of being unemployed, will be in better health, and paying off debts will be possible! Unemployment is on the rise, always trying to be avoided. By obtaining a degree, the chance of being out of work is reduced. Baum, Ma, & Payea (2013) claim, “The 2012 unemployment rates for 25- to 34-year-olds were 9.6% for those with some college but no degree and 7.2% for those with associate degrees” (p.20).
Is college worth it? Is college worth the time and energy you invest? This is a question that many students ask themselves as the cost of college rises and jobs are harder to find. As a 27 year, old college student myself I really thought about this question. I had to think back when I first started college at the age of 18 and how I was excited about starting college. But for the mast majority that are actually contemplating furthering their education I say go for it and that you won 't regret it. For the past few months I have been attending college as a first year, but recently I have started to ask myself is college really worth it? Or is there a better alternative other than going on the traditional path to college? Furthermore if there are alternative path instead of attending college, why aren’t we taking them? In many situations we do have the option of acquiring special licenses and certifications that can get us the careers we desire, but without the need to attend college, but if we can do things like getting licenses and certificates then why do most of us choose to go to college knowing that there is a better option? Even more, a better option that will probably not cost you as much in the long run. Yet millions upon millions of students make the choice of going to college every year, for this I ask why?
Nowadays people passion about becoming successful in life. Everybody wants to have a lot of money, because money makes our lives easier. To get a lot of money, we have to have a well-paid job. To get a good job without a college education is hard, but some people still earn a lot of money without it. So, is going to college worth your time and money now, for your life tomorrow? Honestly college at this certain point in time does not seem worth it. Everywhere else in the world college is free but the United States. People would feel more motivated to go to college if it was free. College is the main reason Americans are having to live such a hard lifestyle. My father did not go to college and makes eighteen dollars an hour. On the other hand my aunt did go to college and make twenty-four dollars an hour but is still paying back student loans so after paying all of her stuff back she only makes around fifteen dollars an hour that she gets to bring back and that doesn’t include taxes. That’s the reason college doesn’t seem like a good choice to make in life.

It is easy to think college is not worth the cost to become better, but getting educated molds a better person, and creates happier people in the future and occasionally they become better in health (Leonhardt 25 ). Becoming a better and happier person is pleasing for everyone. Even former President Obama says “‘Education helps us be better people. It helps us be better citizens. You came to college to learn about the world and to engage with new ideas and to discover the things you're passionate about -- and maybe have a little fun’” (Procon.org). Learning and engaging in everything is a skill everyone should have, so like he said we should go to college to be able to do that. Additionally, education shows people to develop more intellectual skill and become more responsible (Pew Social and Demographic Trends). Thus said, being educated and smart is something everyone can do and college helps with that. Likewise, college can encourage someone to be more educated and happier. Reaching the point of happier and more educated is worth the cost.
