Bullying is unwanted, aggressive behavior among school aged children that involves a real or perceived power imbalance (Bullying Definition). Bullying happens because most bullies have a troubled life at home and take it out on other kids at school. People get bullied for many different reasons, including sexuality, weight, looks, skin color, religion, and disabilities. Bullying is a very serious and common problem in schools today. About 77% of students are bullied in some sort of way. Bullying causes mental, physical, and emotional pain to many students across America. Throughout many schools in the United States, studies have been done to receive more information about bullying directly from students. More than 50% of victims and bystanders do not report the bully. Most bullies victimize students of the same age or graduation class. Only about 30% of victims report the bully being older. In a survey of 7th and 11th graders, 48% reported being harassed in some way. Only 10-20% of noninvolved students provide real help when another student is being victimized. About 30% of all child suicides can be directly proven to be related to bullying (Meyer, Elizabeth). There a few different ways of being harassed inside and outside of school. There are three main types of bulling. One of these three is physical bullying. Physical bullying is rarely the first form of bullying that a target will experience. In physical bullying, the main weapon used against the victim is their body. Physical bullying is more likely to occur among males, though females may also be the perpetuators or victims of physical bulling (Physical Bullying). Many bullies cross the thin line between physical bullying and physical assault. Parents have to recognize the warning signs that their child will show if they are involved in bullying. They could be being bullied, bullying others, or witnessing bullying. Adults should utilize tips and tools to talk to their child about bullying. Opening lines of communication before a child is involved in bullying makes it easier for them to tell them when something happens. It is also important to work with a school to help prevent bullying before it starts. Although there are many different kinds of bullying, they all have the same effects on people and they all can be resolved using most of the same techniques. Bullying is a huge problem in schools today and can cause long-lasting damage to many people.
