To venture into the realm of science and technology is to pursue a path of boundless discovery. I am in awe of how much humanity has been shaped by medical advances, paving the way for new cures and better anatomical understanding. Civilization itself relies solely upon such advances, thus the urge to contribute to an ever-changing profession has long since ignited my interest in a biomedical engineering course. In the last few years I have realized that my passion lies in developing affordable technology that could save many suffering patients and their ailments and improve the quality of life of those with serious medical conditions. It has been two years since I immigrated to Canada with my parents and siblings to pursue my Engineering. Unfortunately within a year, we had to move from Toronto to Calgary in pursuit of employment for better employment opportunities but even after a year my father was called for only one job interview. He is struggling both in his personal and professional life. To say he is scarred, is putting it mildly. He left a very successful career with the knowledge and he is facing a great difficulty to get a similar position but we never anticipated that he would end up feeling invisible and a non-entity with absolutely nothing to offer except involving voluntarily with the organizations. At the age of 14, I decided I was going to be a doctor. This decision was based not only on my fascination with science, specifically the human body, but also on the outdated and ineffective health care system in my home county, Nigeria. The event that incited my decision was the death of my twin siblings shortly after their birth, due to the incompetence of the doctors. It was a very hard time for my family which made me realize the urgent need for good doctors in Nigeria. Hence, I took it upon myself to be a contribution to an improved health care system.
Since graduating high school three years ago I’ve had a solid understanding of what I wanted to study in college. In middle and high school, the life sciences always peaked my interest, in large part due to my extremely passionate and knowledgeable teachers. I also enjoyed solving problems and didn’t mind working hard. When I applied to WPI I saw Biomedical Engineering as everything I ever wanted; it represented a growing and diverse field in the life sciences and engineering where innovation could have a long-lasting impact on society. Since I got accepted to WPI, I have maintained this vision.
Sloshing through the mud to the feed trough, digging fence post holes in the beating sun, and breaking the ice on the pond in the dead of winter isn’t where you would expect one to develop an intrinsic motivation to pursue something great. Growing up on a 400 acres farm in rural Clark County, KY and spending every day after school, and all my weekends, summer, winter, and spring breaks for 8 years molded me to have discipline and maturity. My grandfather, brother, and I ran 200 steers every year and worked around the clock to make them into the most prized cattle at auction every year. I hope my college experience will embody service and education for others. This desire is what I want to carry with me as I pursue medical school. After completing high school, I have some grand ideas planned for my schooling and future career. As I have gone through my schooling at MOC-Floyd Valley High School, I have come to the realization that I want to pursue a career in the medical field. With the hustle and bustle in an emergency room, or the child with a cold, I want to be there to assist in any situation. This is along the lines of natural sciences that this scholarship outlines. To be in specific, I plan to major in nursing, and possibly have minor in psychology.
To explain my transition out of biomedical engineering graduate studies, I first need to explain how I started in the program. Based on the job outlook for biomedical engineering graduates, I decided to apply for graduate school. At the time, it seemed like a viable option because 1) it gave more time for the job market to develop, and 2) I had previous undergraduate research experience within the bioengineering department so I felt that I was a competitive applicant. I stuck with what I knew through my undergraduate training and applied to the PhD program in the Agricultural and Biological Engineering Department at Mississippi State University.
The decision to apply for a master’s program at the esteemed, Illinois Institute of Technology comes from a great passion to pursue research and personally contribute to the field of Biomedical Engineering. With the field’s innovative approach to bridge the gap between engineering and medicine, it has given answers to many of the pressing problems of healthcare system; nevertheless there are many challenges yet to overcome. I have always been good at biology and mathematics. This is one reason why one of my many goals is to major in biomedical engineering. I am very excited to start studying biomedical sciences, and hope to use my newly learned skills in the medical field.
