Case Study 3 Question 1: What problems might a multi-generational and multi-cultural family such as this have in understanding Asperger’s syndrome? This multi-cultural family includes a father and grandmother who were born, raised, and speak fluent Korean and a mother who was born and raised in the United States, and is not fluent in Korean. David is bilingual; therefore, he has both Korean and United States influences in his life. The grandmother sees the diagnosis of Asperger’s syndrome as a gift, but the parents view it as a disorder. Korea is a high-context society where nonverbal communication is larger than verbal communication. Therefore, David’s grandmother does not notice the verbal communication problems that David has. Our primary concerns would be the insurance problem; Mr. Garcia would have been given oral and written information, in Spanish, of his insurance options. At discharge from the hospital, Mr. Garcia would have been given a translated sheet with exercises or activities to do to improve his physical health because he refused therapy. Explaining to the wife that, in fact, Mr. Garcia’s help around the house would be a good thing and that in doing everything, she is not helping her husband get better. We would look into the treatments Mr. Garcia is receiving from the curandero to see if specific treatments may be harming his recovers; suggesting a diet high in fat may not be the best for his health after a heart attack. If there are any treatments Mr. Garcia is receiving from the curandero that are helpful, it would be important for us to praise these. Showing Mr. Garcia a way of life that limits harmful situations/things which can lead to another heart attack is important. Including his wife in this conversation would also be vital because he comes from a familial culture
