The summer vacation students on a traditional schedule receive could be very beneficial since summer gives time for the students to attend camps or other activities that would allow them to learn. The camp may not be like the learning in school, but students would be able to get a different style of education while having fun. Do you ever get stressed over work from school or your job? Well, that is why breaks and vacations are so important. Stress is pressure or tension applied to a material object. When people have stress or are stressed, they do not need to worry about it, stress is a normal physical response to events that make you feel threatened or upset your balance in some way. Stress is your body’s way of protecting you. When working properly, it helps you stay focussed on what you're doing, keeps your energy flowing, and helps you be more aware of what is going on. Being stressed isn’t always a long lasting situation, it can easily be demolished by taking frequent breaks in between activities, events, assignments, and other stressful moments. Another way to relieve stress, is to have one or two days in the week that are dedicated to your relaxation. Getting stressed from school is extremely common. Children especially get stressed because their system can not handle too many things at once because they are still developing humans. Your health will deteriorate over time if we don't take a break from work, research concludes. Many people need the time and space away from what they experience every day in order to recognize harmful or self-destructive patterns in their life. Many parents, teachers, and adults complain that summer vacation for schools is such an amazing idea because, there is much knowledge loss throughout the break, however scientists have proven that to live a happy, satisfying, and successful life, everyone needs to give their mind a break from stress at school and work thereby proving that summer break is necessary.
Why are so many schools changing to a year-round schedule when study finds that a year-round does not boost learning compared to traditional schools? Paul von Hippel, a sociologist at Ohio State, conducted a study which found that “students in year-round schools learn more during the summer, when others are on vacation when others are on vacation, but they seem to learn less during the school year.” This means that people on the traditional schedules have an eight month lead in education on people in year-round schools. When students go on summer break they tend to forget the things they learned at school so most parents want their child to go to school year round so they can become smarter and so they can have things to do over the summer. Some people think kids are wasting their time when they get out of school because they don’t do anything over summer break. Also parents think that it helps the kids remember stuff better NO!! it doesn’t it put more stress on a child and when stress happen a lot more things happen like dropping out killing their self. Children learn best when the education is continuous. Longer breaks tend to cause students to lose information that they learned in the past school year. On average, students lose “about onemonth of instruction over summer vacation.” (Luzer) For lower income students, this loss is even greater. There is a gap between lower and higher income students and it is due to the options that the students have available to them. Summer programs can be used to “keep children from falling behind and reduce the achievement gap.” (Smink) Because of this, it is important for the government to provide adequate programs in the summer for children who hope to continue learning throughout the summer. The reasons behind having a three month summer break are outdated and do not provide any functional advantages to the present day student. The current school year lasting nine months with a three month summer vacation is not necessary in today’s society. It originally served to allow children in rural communities help their families with the harvest (Hemerson and Gove 8). Educators originally saw the nine month school year as a way to maximize attendance in rural areas of the country (O'Sullivan 399). This serves no functioning purpose in today's society. It is estimated today that only 3% of the population is involved in agriculture (Kralovec 32). Summer break was not always around for all schools though, it only came around to all schools in the early 1900 's due to Americans wanting a standardized school schedule across the nation.
