Generally speaking, when students of all ages are asked what the purpose of school is, they will respond with an answer on the lines of “To prepare us for the real world”. Keeping this in mind, our society therefore sees the necessity to develop strong math, reading and critical thinking skills. On the quest to discover said skills, people in school such as myself, look towards our teachers and professors for guidance and knowledge. We thus begin to theoretically master the skills learned as a result of attending school 9 months of the year. Upon analysis, the general ideology behind their argument revolves around the notion that “On average, American schoolchildren lose the equivalent of about one month of instruction over summer vacation. The impact is most dramatic in spelling and math.” Additionally, others speak of "Our students today are competing against children in India and China. Those students are going to school 25 to 30 percent longer than we are. Our students, I think, are at a competitive disadvantage.". The time in which we are given off is truly what one makes out of it just like school. We cannot force our youth and ourselves to be productive in the summer similar to our inability to force them to be productive in the time school is session. What truly counts is the student 's engagement in the matter. Personally speaking, weekends, holidays and vacation time is a time to take a load off one 's shoulders and put ourselves to work in other forms. Every summer, we see students out and about setting up lemonade stands, partaking in paper routes, gaining employment and basically becoming entrepreneurs and setting the cornerstone to their futures in the real world, not just the hypothetical world schools prepare for. In looking at my own life, I see that summer break is a main factor to me being where I am today. As a result of the breaks, I was able to become an employee at a Fortune 100 company. While the application of my mastered vocabulary and my communication helped me to receive the job, my constant improvements and applications of what I learned through the years in the real world helped me to excel with
