Generally speaking, when students of all ages are asked what the purpose of school is, they will respond with an answer on the lines of “To prepare us for the real world”. Keeping this in mind, our society therefore sees the necessity to develop strong math, reading and critical thinking skills. On the quest to discover said skills, people in school such as myself, look towards our teachers and professors for guidance and knowledge. We thus begin to theoretically master the skills learned as a result of attending school 9 months of the year. Upon analysis, the general ideology behind their argument revolves around the notion that “On average, American schoolchildren lose the equivalent of about one month of instruction over summer vacation. The impact is most dramatic in spelling and math.” Additionally, others speak of "Our students today are competing against children in India and China. Those students are going to school 25 to 30 percent longer than we are. Our students, I think, are at a competitive disadvantage.". The time in which we are given off is truly what one makes out of it just like school. We cannot force our youth and ourselves to be productive in the summer similar to our inability to force them to be productive in the time school is session. What truly counts is the student 's engagement in the matter. Personally speaking, weekends, holidays and vacation time is a time to take a load off one 's shoulders and put ourselves to work in other forms. Every summer, we see students out and about setting up lemonade stands, partaking in paper routes, gaining employment and basically becoming entrepreneurs and setting the cornerstone to their futures in the real world, not just the hypothetical world schools prepare for. In looking at my own life, I see that summer break is a main factor to me being where I am today. As a result of the breaks, I was able to become an employee at a Fortune 100 company. While the application of my mastered vocabulary and my communication helped me to receive the job, my constant improvements and applications of what I learned through the years in the real world helped me to excel with
Nonetheless, there is some resistance to schools converting to a year-round calendar. Most of that opposition comes from the reduction in intersession length, and some students and/or parents don 't like the idea of year-round education from the start. This gives families a reason to voice their opposition when both the parents and child 's schedules do not line up with one another. This usually affects households that wish to take long vacations over the course of a summer. Parents, in some cases, may oppose this change because of child care needs. Child care raises opposition since there is a shift in the school year calendar. Parents may not be able to find nannies or babysitters. The summer vacation students on a traditional schedule receive could be very beneficial since summer gives time for the students to attend camps or other activities that would allow them to learn. The camp may not be like the learning in school, but students would be able to get a different style of education while having fun. Lynn-nore Chittom and Jeff Klassen, two authors who wrote about year-round vs. traditional schooling say, “Critics also cite year-round school as an obstacle to summer enrichment programs such as youth camps, and note that the balanced calendar model can hurt students and industries dependent on short-term summer employment” (Chittom). Year round schooling is becoming increasingly popular in the United States, and has shown positive academic benefits for students enrolled in year round schools. Many countries implement year round schooling, and academic ability of their students greatly surpasses those of the United States. Year round schooling, as well as increase in school days should be implemented in schools nationwide in the United States. The need for long summer vacations is non-existent, as society has become industrialized. Implementing year-round schooling, and increasing the number of school days will allow the United States to invest more time into education in order to grow and build academic success.
While growing up, I attended a traditional school. This is a schooling method many individuals are probably familiar with. A student attends school for nine months out of the year, and then has a three month break during the summer. However, in my immediate hometown surroundings, nearby traditional schools are assessing the idea of transforming into year-round schools. Year round schooling is one subject debated in high schools, middle schools, and elementary schools nationwide. Are schools that operate 365 days a year academically better than traditional schools? What are the cost differences between the two? How would a year-round school effect families? Changing the schooling technique from traditional to year-round has numerous variables that need to be taken into consideration before any grade school or secondary education institution fully commits. Year-round schooling schedules should not be implemented and traditional schooling calendars should be maintained.
Throughout time education has been considered a process that every so often must be improved. The education quality in the U.S. has declined over the years and people have been looking for a way to make improvements. A more recent proposal has been to go from a traditional nine-month schedule to an all year program. Supporters of year round school claim it gives the student a better education. In the United States, most schools still use a ten-month calendar that was developed when our country’s students needed school off to help with harvesting (Palmer). Trimble Local Schools Superintendent Kim Jones says, “year-round schooling is the notion of getting away from the old agrarian calendar...which was formed up around the planting season. Students were out of school from April until harvest to work in the fields,” (qtd. in Hapka). Under the agrarian system, most United States students are in school for nine to ten months, and get a two- to three- month summer vacation. However, the United States is no longer an agricultural-based society, and students have no need to take a three-month-long, unnecessary, not to mention disruptive break during the summer months; instead, the United States should switch the school systems to a year-round calendar.
Stress is an important problem faced by many college students, especially first year students, and it can have a large impact on college freshmen. For example, according to Hirsch and Keniston (1970), about half of first year students do not graduate from college due to dropping out (p. 1-20). Also, David Leonhardt (2009) agrees that the United States excels at putting “teenagers in college, but only half of students who enroll end up with a bachelor’s degree” (p. 1). In addition, the level of stress seems to increase each year. For instance, the National Health Ministries (2006) claim that many college students have become “more overwhelmed and stressed” than the student generation of the last fifteen years (p. 2).

If you’re anything like me or any other high school student you know that stress season is coming. It’s a joyous time where students unite to form study groups and enjoy the last two weeks of the semester before they go off into the boring period of “winter break.” Of course, no winter break is complete without the wonderful problem filled stapled stacks of papers handed to you as you walk out the door the last day. When you get handed that packet you know that those long winter break days that seem to last forever be no more thanks to all your teachers. May the rest of your day be filled with bliss and delight. To have year round schooling it much more expensive than a regular school year, to have school year round it, can cost “up to $1,300 more per student.” Also, most students in high school have a summertime job for those three months. But, if schooling was year round teens wouldn't be able to work in the summer. So the amount of times teens can work would decrease. In addition, kids would be much busier with school year around because of all the work and less free time to do whatever. For instance, kids with a lot of homework, projects and other things from school wouldn’t allow them to do things they like in their free time. For example, kids wouldn't be able to hang out with friends, family, play travel sports, or go on vacations because of the lack of free time they would get with school year
There are thousands of things I love, but vacation is on the number one list. Many times over the years I have taken vacation time; It was only a while back, when I realized how amaz-ing, and the great value it gives the sole and body. There have been times when I felt not wanting to leave my work, whether it’s financial problems or among other things. Other times I thought my work was at a decisive juncture and it wouldn 't get accomplished without me. All profession-als or employees know that the money does not just make itself unless they are there to make sure everything is going according to their policy. I know I am not alone in making excuses not to take a vacation. When I asked a couple of my co-workers, they also agreed on not even taking a week off for the entire year, some even included holidays.
I agree and think that we should not have that long of a summer when we can just have more breaks but shorter. When summer is that long then what is the point of going back to school because we forget everything anyways during that long break. So I believe we should have a fall break during Thanksgiving, a winter break during Christmas, a summer break that’s not as long, and a spring break.
