As the school year is coming to an end, many children are counting the days until summer begins – three months of freedom and relaxation without any teachers, schedules, or assignments. However, when the school year starts in the fall, many students find that they have forgotten what they have learned in the past school year. Summer vacations impact learning and development in both negative and positive ways. Although summer vacations can cause learning loss, it is still beneficial to learning and development by promoting creativity and independence.

Families have been accustomed to summer vacations and parents are not willing to continually spend the time to send kids to school in the summer. “Many teachers and school board members found that the new schedule disrupted ‘family lives and vacation spending.’” (Luzer) Being around friends and family helps children to develop connections that they will need in life. Having available time in the summer for children to spend for themselves either working, volunteering, or going to different programs allow children grow and mature in a place where it is not a classroom setting. It is important to allow children to be able to have different options and choices to spend their time without a schedule so that they can become more independent. Children learn best when the education is continuous. Longer breaks tend to cause students to lose information that they learned in the past school year. On average, students lose “about onemonth of instruction over summer vacation.” (Luzer) For lower income students, this loss is even greater. There is a gap between lower and higher income students and it is due to the options that the students have available to them. Summer programs can be used to “keep children from falling behind and reduce the achievement gap.” (Smink) Because of this, it is important for the government to provide adequate programs in the summer for children who hope to continue learning throughout the summer. To whatever extent the loss of material that summer vacation cause, it affects all students in some way. Although they are not learning typical school lessons in the summer, they are learning life skills and making connections that they do not learn in school. School usually emphasize math and writing but do not focus on art or innovation. Therefore, it is important to have summer vacation as a time allow children to develop and learn different things outside of
One main doubt that many people believe is that home schooling makes a negative approach to one’s child social skills. This is based on the supposition that children who are home schooled are trapped at home all the time. People who still suppose that children are home 365 days a year are mistaken, because home school children have several opportunities to interact with other kids their own age. According to Dr. Brian D. Ray, his studies substantiate that, homeschooled students are engaged in outside activities. They are frequently caught up in activities such as field trips, sports, etc. Homeschooled children do not only hang out with people their own age, but they learn how to socialize with people of all ages. This is a great benefit because they learn to communicate and become amiable (Ray 1).
Many students feel very tired after a couple of months in school. Imagine if they never got time to be kids. Students need to have enough time to relax and be kids during their break. Even if students have the same amount of days off, One big break would be better for them. This would help with family vacations. Having summers off would help kids participate in other activities that they couldn't during the school year.
The summer vacation students on a traditional schedule receive could be very beneficial since summer gives time for the students to attend camps or other activities that would allow them to learn. The camp may not be like the learning in school, but students would be able to get a different style of education while having fun. Lynn-nore Chittom and Jeff Klassen, two authors who wrote about year-round vs. traditional schooling say,
First of all there a lot of supporters agree on the same thing like susan myer.According to Susan Meyer “she is a pediatrician for children”Middle School also needs time for relaxation and play. The Point it is sometimes good
Summer is a time where people have gatherings, goof around, take vacations and spend time with their family. Many students are used to having two week winter break, one week spring break, and three months of summer break. Changing this traditional format could lead to negative effects for many students, educators, and families. A balanced school year would not have enough benefits to change schedule.

The summertime is when kids play outside and do whatever they want. Some kids even go to day care or their friends’ house to do something different, “Many children go to summer camps where they learn many of important skills not covered in school” (Cooper 3). Doing work in the summer that does not interest them will make kids despise summer. It also will not let the kids do want they want to do in peace, because they will worry about the huge assignment they still have to finish, “…the backbreaking obligation to read Charles Dickens blighted June, ravaged July obliterated August” (Queenan,1). Some might argue that the long summer will make the children forget what they learned, but if the students cannot relearn what they already knew in a month or less, that means that they are not being taught correctly. In general, summer reading makes a students' summer into more school time, which is not helpful to them.
For years, parents and educators have debated the advantages and disadvantages of the traditional school calendar, which has long summer vacations for all students. The longer you are away from school, the more you lose what you learned in the previous year. Studies have shown that children who know English as a second language benefit the most from year-round education because during the long summer break, they may not hear English for several months. Long summer breaks is a problem for traditional schools and the solution is to substitute traditional schools for year-round schools.
Family vacations, pool memberships, and corn de-tasseling; these have been the experiences of traditional Midwestern summers. For centuries young American children have attended school during the winter months, during farming off seasons when their families could afford to be without them. Families have grown accustomed to a traditional school calendar that provides time for bonding throughout the year. Students have grown accustomed to an eight week break during the summer months where they are allowed to refresh their minds before returning for a new school year. Unfortunately, these traditional experiences and practices are now in jeopardy. In today’s race to improve student achievement, traditional school calendars have become a point of contention. Today more and more school districts and parents alike have begun to debate the pros and cons of an alternative school calendar.
Another significant reason is summer vacation needs to be longer. The primary reason for this is children need time to wind down and relax before they have to go back to school. For instance, during the summer children relax and prepare for school, if they...
Likewise, summer gives time for kids to relax and prepare for the fall quarter (Chu). Kids need summer break, so they have time to recover. In addition, Chu reports that summer is needed because kids who don’t take the summer off feel less motivated. Summer break helps kids recuperate from the social pressure. Furthermore, break gives kids time to work on something and follow their dreams.
Saunders, M. (2004, September 7). Try year-round school: The lazy days of summer may hurt children who struggle in school the rest of the time. Atlanta Journal-Constitution, pp. 14A, Retrieved November 6, 2004, from Lexus-Nexus.
As part of the traditional school calendar kids get about ten weeks out of school for summer break. Commonly that time filled with summer camps, family vacation, summer jobs, and relaxation. During the long summer break children forget some of the things learned during the school year and require a lot of time reviewing when class resumes. Richard L. Summer vacation. For most children and teens, the phrase conjures up images of hot, sunny days and vacations with the whole family to far-off places. We all envision lazy afternoons relaxing on the beach, playing in water parks, and going on picnics. But what happens when summer ends and the reality of another year of school sinks in?
Also, a longer break would let them spend time with family members. Students would like a longer summer break to spend time with family members. Students could stay with other family members and cook out with them, play games with their family members, and talk with their family members as well.
