Human reason has not always been a presence in our daily lives. Doing the right thing, being ethical, and making educated decisions, one would think, are the ideal principles behind human nature. Sadly, only in more recent times has human reason shed its good grace on more modern societies. For many centuries, constant war and the reconstruction to nations, countries, and empires led to the rise and fall of many different leaders and in tow their governments. Within such societies, political spokesmen like Machiavelli, Locke, and Marx, interpret their ideas to the people, which still remain significant to this day. One of their main focuses was to raise awareness, on their ideas on trust and human reason. While Locke and Marx urge us to have faith in human reason, as a positive means to society, Machiavelli would claim the contrary. The concept of human nature and reason to both John Locke and Karl Marx juxtaposes that of Machiavelli’s, and their notions derive from their different eras, economies, environments, and strict governments, which ultimately shaped their ideologies on human nature.
Migration is an arduous process and can be a stress-inducing experience (Aroian & Norris, 2003) that can lead to numerous social and mental health issues varying from social isolation, depression and anxiety (Blair, 2000). Alongside migration comes the complex and lifelong endeavor of acculturation, defined as the process by which individuals or groups transition from one or more cultures into another (Cainkar, 2000). Although Arab immigrants have been migrating to the United States since 1854 (Miller, 1976) and may currently number more than two million today (Nydell, 2012), discussion of the Arab American populations was, until recently, conspicuously absent from the literature. This article will first explore the reasons for immigration as it impacts the way this population assimilates to their host country. It will then provide a description of the challenges and difficulties this population faces, with a focus on the source of the post immigration stressors they undergo and the impact it has on their acculturation process. Finally, it will explore the use of an existential approach in treatment with an Arab-American client resisting assimilation to the new host country due to an inability to cope with post-immigration stressors.

Disadvantaged neighborhoods often present problems such as concentrated poverty, pollution, neglect of maintenance, vandalism, crime, poor mental and physical health and social isolation, which lead to a poor quality of life (Dekker, 2007; Sampson 2012). Many Western countries are trying to both approach and arrest these problems by designing area-based improvement policies (Gade, 2001; Andersson & Musterd, 2005). Before such programs can be implemented, however, one must be aware of which factors may be involved in the problems present in disadvantaged neighborhoods. Although research in this field suggests that there are many factors responsible for the above mentioned problems, this essay will only focus on the social dimension, and more specifically on social cohesion. Although debated, research suggests that Social cohesion may play a critical role in improving quality of life in disadvantaged neighborhoods, for example by reducing crime (Sampson, 2012; Dekker, 2007; Dekker & Bolt, 2005).
There are different gender identities such as male, female, gay, lesbian, transgender, and bisexual that exist all around the world. There is inequality in gender identities and dominance of males regardless of which sexuality they fall under. The males are superior over the females and gays superior over the lesbians, however it is different depending on the place and circumstances. This paper will look at the gender roles and stereotypes, social policy, and homosexuality from a modern and traditional society perspective. The three different areas will be compared by the two different societies to understand how much change has occurred and whether or not anything has really changed.

According to Kluckhohn, society is a group of people who interact more with each other than they do with individuals and culture is a group of people with distinctive ways of life (1949, 76). Culture and society are important to each other because culture is constructed by society. A person cannot understand one without the other because one constructs the other. How a person behaves and interacts with others is determined by culture and society that they were raised in. This is major factor to understand, we judge people by immediate situations and don’t take into consideration that person past. I also want to bring up another quote from Kluckhohn, “A culture is learned by individuals as the result of belonging to some particular group” (1949, 78). After viewing my cultural map, one may infer many things about me. I was born and raised in a Sidney, a small town in eastern Montana. My hometown is known for farming, oil, and high school sports. My high school had 400 students, and my graduating class consisted of 85 students. As seen in my map, my high school was predominantly compromised of white students, and when I say predominantly, I mean almost entirely.
