It seems like common sense to teach people about potential dangers they might face in their lives. Instead of waiting for someone to get hit by a car, teach them to look both ways before they cross the street. Sex education is a course that aims to teach people about the precautions that should be taken when having or not having sex. It is supposed to serve the purpose of preventing harmful things from happening through educating. Across the world only a select few counties teach some form of sexual education, and of those select few countries only a handful of them offer the courses to women. Sex education is a course that breaches on topics that could be misconstrued by the instructor to benefit them and not the students. In his book Too Hot To Handle A Global History Of Sex Education, Jonathan Zimmerman interviewed people from across the globe about sex education in their communities. In some countries in Africa it is a normal occurrence that, “... male teachers coerce female students into trading sex for school fees… one African critic charged, ‘sex education… has opened doors for many teachers to take advantage of the age and vulnerability of girls to abuse them sexually’” (134). The sex education course is seen as a problem because it causes students to worry “about sexual exploitation or harassment by teachers” (135). When it comes to anything in daily life, risk exists. By no means is it okay for educators teaching sex education to sexually exploit girls during class, yet it should not be the reason why girls do not have access to a sexual education course. This issue can be eliminated by school districts by having strict restrictions on whom they can hire to teach this course. The real problem with these scenarios of girls getting sexually assaulted by their teachers during sex ed is not solely the teachers, but the course itself. With the current sex education being taught there is a central focus on heteronormativity and the male reproductive system. The course needs to be changed to something more inclusive so it accomplishes what it is put in place to accomplish, which is to teach people about sex and how it affects their bodies. By allowing more people to have access to take a sexual education course the course will have more opportunities to be interpreted and changed in different ways to make it more inclusive and helpful for all people.
