What does it mean to be introverted versus extraverted and why does it dictate how an individual perceives the world? Why does popular culture suggest there are an abundance of extraverted individuals living amongst the population? Laurie Helgoe, a psychologist with a Ph. D in psychodynamic psychotherapy and author of Revenge of the Introvert, an article which troves through different aspects of introversion and how they may manipulate the life of a given introverted individual. The introvert is an interesting person, they are one that prefers to stay within themselves and don’t need external stimulation to get they’re brain juices flowing. Contrarily, the extravert is one that needs there to be activity around them or they begin to lose steam. These situations where an introvert may attempt to extravert themselves to conform to the norms, which can cause negative feedback in the perception of the situation because the psyche is out of its element. “Acting counter dispositionally is depleting,” (Helgoe, 2010, p.58), a statement that essentially modernizes, “Over differentiation leads to a disturbance of balance [of mental psyche],” (Jung, 1973, p.18). Both quotes essentially stating that acting against normal behavior is mentally taxing to the individual. Suppressing negative emotions and faking positive ones can lead to a lower self-authenticity and, in turn, stress and depressive moods. Hiding or faking emotions, “may not reduce the experience of negative emotion but they [negative feelings] may continue to linger, retaining these bad feelings can clamp down on the expression of positive emotions” (Guttmann & Iiraz, 2016, p.
