What does the definition of “good” mean to you? For me it means you’ve lived your life being kind, appreciating what you have, being helpful, thoughtful and always trying to see the good in life. Amos Fortune is a great example of someone who lived a good life despite having every reason not to. What made Amos Fortune such a good person? One thing is clear that despite being torn from his home and forced into slavery he knew how to appreciate what he had in life. Amos’s first owner was Caleb Copeland and as the years went by Amos soaked up all that was being taught to him (and truly appreciated it despite not being free) and as the time came closer for his manumission he felt he wasn’t ready. The third women (Violet and her daughter, Celyndia) he married and adopted her daughter as his own. Again, how is this not a perfect example of a person living there life to the best of one’s ability? On page 112 of his book he talks about moving to Jaffrey, New Hampshire, to start his own tanning business, and leaving better equipment behind in Woburn. He knew by living in Jaffrey he had land, a family, and freedom; and for that he was appreciative. And lastly when Amos new his time was nearing he went and had his will drafted setting aside money for the local church to buy a silver communion set and the school to do what it pleased with it, so even after death he was still giving to others.
