Abraham Maslow’s- Hierarchy of Needs, “Self-Actualization” Abraham Maslow arranged human needs into a hierarchy of five needs, starting with the most important needs which are physiological needs such as, hunger, thirst, and warmth. He then went all the way up to the least important which is self-actualization that is known as the fulfillment of unique potentials. His hierarchy of needs is depicted in a pyramidal form with the most important needs at the bottom as a base and the least important towards the top. According to Maslow when the base of the pyramid’s needs is met one can then focus their attention on becoming self-actualized. Self-actualized people have nine characteristics they have peak experiences, they possess self-acceptance and a democratic world view, they are realistic, they tend to be problem centered, they tend to be very independent, they enjoy solitude and privacy, they have a philosophical sense of humor, they are spontaneous, and they fully enjoy the journey, not just the destination (Cherry, 2017). Safety and security needs may include job security, having a savings account, insurance policies, and finacial security, and health and well-being. People feel the need to control this aspect of their lives to make them feel more secure. This need for safety and security contributes largely to behaviors at this level (Cherry, 2017). Together, the safety and physiological levels of the hierarchy make up what is often reffered to as the basic needs (Cherry, 2017). Financial security plays a role in people’s behaviors. For an example, someone struggling with finances may be unhappy and feel insecure about how they may pay for something. Whether people realize it or not safety and security play a huge role in how people feel and as well as their behaviors. If a person feels unsafe or uncertain in the environment they are in they will seek to meet the highest level of needs for safety. Safety and security needs are an important part of survival. If someone is not aware of how to determine their environment is dangerous and need to meet the level of safety and security it could be harmful to them.
