When I was little, I used to stay up late at night, watching old movies with my father. He worked at night, so on his nights off, he often could not sleep. Our dad-daughter bond was, no doubt, forged by our love of old black and white and even cheesy films. It was on one of these late nights that I first saw a huge snake coiled next to a tree, draped in a glittery sheep’s fur. I am sure that my eyes were big with awe the whole time, for to this day, when I watch or even read mythological stories, I feel the same childhood awe. The movie Jason and the Argonauts, directed by Nick Willing in 2000, is certainly not as campy as the old black and white, but it is just as awe-inspiring as is Peter Green’s translation of Apollonius of Rhodes’ version of Jason’s story: “Argonautika: The Story of Jason and the In the case of the Argonautika the book illuminated every step of the journey that the Argonauts took but in the movie there were major parts left out and the story line was skewed severely. If you compare the Odyssey, the book and the Odyssey the movie, the movie was much closer to the book, yes there might have been things left out or changed for the purpose of making the movie easer to view, but there weren’t large chunks left out or changed severely. For instance, in the movie Jason and the Argonauts, the voyage home was left out completely. They got the fleece and got in their boat and in a few moments were back home. This was not an accurate account of the trials of the Argonauts. The Argonauts had many hard ships getting back home because they could not go the same way they had come, because the Clashing Rocks were now to forever stay together never to reopen once a ship successfully passed through them, as did the Argo. Also the Argonauts had the Kolchians following them wanting to get Medeia and the Golden Fleece
The story of the Odyssey has so many events and conflicts that happen throughout it. In mythology, many of the stories have a moral or reasoning to teach us different things about life. The main moral of the Odyssey is that you should never give up or quit, even if it is challenging. It took twenty years for Odysseus to get back home because of all the adventures and challenges he faced. The writer of the Odyssey was Homer and the directors of the movie, O Brother, Where Art Thou? was Ethan Coen and Joel Coen. The movie, O Brother, Where Art Thou? and the book, The Odyssey, have many things in common, not only the adventures but the moral as well. But, they also differ in many things, such as the settings, events, and characters..
Tens of thousands of stories fit into the hero’s journey archetype created by Christopher Volger. Out of these, a large number of them are stories with remakes that share notable resemblances in their heroes’ journeys. However, none of these quite match those very strong similarities found between Homer’s The Odyssey and Joel Coens’s O Brother, Where Art Thou? These stories share crucial components of the hero’s journey whether it be “crossing the first threshold,” where the main characters of both stories begin their long adventure that transforms them into heroes; “the supreme ordeal,” where the main characters are both deprived of the opportunity to get home sooner; or “return with elixir,” where Odysseus and Ulysses both return to their homes alive the comfort of their wives. In their major plot points, the novel The Odyssey and the motion picture O Brother convey obvious similarities in key elements of their heroes’ journeys such as “crossing the first threshold,” “the supreme ordeal,” and “return with elixir.”
a hugely different time period and almost a completely different storyline. O Brother, Where art Thou? is a brilliant movie. It makes the movie so much more meaningful when you have read the book and can make the connections. In the beginning of the movie it says that its based on The Odyssey and with all of the appearances of similar characters and events, it would be extremely hard to write a three page paper on how O Brother, Where Art Thou? isn't based on The Odyssey. In regards to that, O Brother, Where Art Thou? is based on many of the characters and events of The Odyssey.
The snake’s calm demeanor when they first meet, his confidence and power, and his gruesome death help evoke sympathy in the reader. The reader’s first impression of the snake is that “he held his ground in calm watchfulness.” His stance was tense, but not threatening, as “his head was not drawn back to strike.” He does not intend to attack without being provoked; he

The Odyssey is no exception to this trick or technique. In the episode Scylla and Charybdis the plot is filled with intense confrontations, a heroic leader, and more. Some of this can be easily identified, for example, when Homer writes. & nbsp; scarcely had that island. faded in the blue air than I saw smoke and white water with waves in tumult- a sound the men heard, and it terrified them. Oars flew from their hands; the blades went.
The film adaptation of Sophocles’ Antigone portrays the text substantially well in several ways. The filmmaker’s interpretation encourages the audience to be discerning as their perception of the Greek tragedy is enhanced. The play becomes profound and reverberant because of the many interesting elements of production. These include musical score, set design, and the strategic costuming – all of which advocates an improved comprehension of Antigone.
From before the dawn of civilization as we know it, humanity has formed myths and legends to explain the natural world around them. Whether it is of Zeus and Hera or Izanami-no-Mikoto and Izanagi-no-mikoto, every civilization and culture upon this world has its own mythos. However, the age of myth is waning as it is overshadowed in this modern era by fundamental religion and empirical science. The word myth has come to connote blatant falsehood; however, it was not always so. Our myths have reflected both the society and values of the culture they are from. We have also reflected our inner psyche, conscious and unconscious, unto the fabric of our myths. This reflection allows us to understand ourselves and other cultures better. Throughout the eons of humanity’s existence, the myths explain natural phenomena and the cultural legends of the epic hero have reflected the foundations and the inner turmoil of the human psyche.

And so, Jason sets sail from Greece, with his crew of valiant Greek heroes, known as the ‘Argonauts’, in a great galley, called the ‘Argo’, constructed by Argus ‘‘wrought by the guidance of Athena’’ (Argonautica, 1: 18). Under the protection of the goddess Hera, the crew of the Argo’s quest was to retrieve the Golden Fleece in order to restore Jason as the rightful King to the throne of Iolcus, a title which was taken from him by his treacherous uncle, Pelias, who had usurped the thrown. The most famed account of the Argonauts’ journey from Greece to Colchis is the epic poem “the Argonautica” written by Apollonius Rhodes during the third century BC, however, many accounts of the journey have been told over time and award us a vast range of tales regarding the adventure to secure the Golden Fleece. The Argonauts themselves consisted of some of the most skilled warriors during the Age of Heroes. Led by Jason, son of Aeson, the Argonauts comprised of heroes such as Heracles, Orpheus, Idmon, gifted with prophecy, Peleus, father of Achilles and Kalais and Zetes, the sons of Boreas. There is a general consensus amongst authors that the Argonauts stopped initially on the island of Lemnos.
“But, strictly speaking, this mythology was no essential part of ancient religion, for it had no sacred sanction and no binding force on the worshippers.” - William Robertson Smith, a Scottish orientalist, Old Testament scholar, professor of divinity, and minister of the Free Church of Scotland. In modern times society has lost interest in ancient mythologies. Ancient societies found comfort in these myths that explained some of the horrible things they went through such as sickness and death. Some of these comforts are even found in today’s society and modern religion.
One of the most noticeable differences between the book and the movie is the absence of the Gods. In Homer's Iliad, the Gods played a major part in the Trojan War. Though the viewers are made aware that the characters believe in the Gods, the only God we see in the movie is Thetis, Achilles' mother. The omission of the Gods from the movie may give the audience a chance to view the characters more believable, however by omitting the Gods, the viewer did not get the full history of the characters.
The roles that a Myth plays in culture is multifaceted, but also quite straightforward. Myths are significant stories shared by a group that addresses fundamental questions that human beings commonly ask, “Who and what am I: Where did I come from: Why am I here: How should I live: What is the difference between right and wrong: What is the nature of universe: How did it all begin and how will it end?” Sayer (2011) states that, “Although myths are speculative, they are not pure fantasy. They are grounded in observed experience. They serve to rationalize the unknown and to explain to people the nature of the universe and their place within it”
... Nature, including human beings, is `red in tooth and claw'; we are all `killers' in one way or another. Also, the fear which inhabits both human and snake (allowing us, generally, to avoid each other), and which acts as the catalyst for this poem, also precipitates retaliation. Instinct, it seems, won't be gainsaid by morality; as in war, our confrontation with Nature has its origins in some irrational `logic' of the soul. The intangibility of fear, as expressed in the imagery of the poem, is seen by the poet to spring from the same source as the snake, namely the earth - or, rather, what the earth symbolizes, our primitive past embedded in our subconsciouness. By revealing the kinship of feelings that permeates all Nature, Judith Wright universalises the experience of this poem.
