Art comes in many different shapes and sizes. From drawing on a desk in high school to digital art on computers, we don’t notice that art surrounds us everywhere. However, there is one particular art form that is gaining interest throughout the world, and has been around for years. This art form is known as Surrealism. Surrealism is the only form of art that truly lets you express your mind the way you want it to be expressed, with no limits or boundaries. In Surrealism, there is no gravity, words flow like water, objects can fly in the limitless skies, and images can swim. Basically, Surrealism has no rules; it is only the artist and his mind.
Around the early 1900’s, soon after the First World War, a man by the name of Tristan Tzara disliked the idea of war, and was disgusted by what happened and why World War 1 started. Tzara thought that a society that creates such chaos as war does not deserve art. However, his attempt to humiliate the new commercial world did not go the way he planned. His anti-art became art. The new chaotic, rebellious images became the status quo. This was known as the Dada Movement. The Dada movement slowly faded into thin air, as a group of artists thought the Dada Movement destroyed the gift of what centuries of artists have learned and passed on about the craft of art. This is when the Surrealist Movement began.
Surrealism, the movement in literature and fine arts, was established by a French poet by the name of Andre Breton. The goal of this movement was to emphasize the unconscious mind in a creative way. It was to express the unconscious mind in a more orderly and serious manner. There are two groups of surrealists that formed throughout this movement. One of the groups is the Automatists. Automatists indulged in a more creative manner, they thought of their art as meaningless. This is not to say they didn’t care about their art, but they simply did not have a definition of what they created. They believed that is was automatic the way images from the subconscious reached the conscious.
The other group of Surrealist are known as the Veristic Surrealists. The Veristics simply were almost the same as the Automatists. Except, the Veristics saw meaning in their work. The Veristics thought of their artwork as a metaphor for an inner reality.
Riopelle received professional training in fine art at the École du Meuble from 1943 to 1946 and was one of the students of another important Canadian artist, Paul-Émile Borduas. Borduas was known as the father of abstraction in Quebec. Borduas encouraged his students to discover a form of freedom and reject all academic constraints, invited them to think “painterly” rather than “literally”. This ideology had laid foundation to Riopelle’s oeuvre. Later, Riopelle joined a group of young abstract artists that led by Borduas, which lately was known as the “Automatist”. He adopted a stance in clear opposition to geometric abstraction. In Riopelle’s works from the late 1940s, he developed the spontaneous expression which favored by the surrealist painters. By Automatism, it means that allow the hands to work freely, that is no particular result in mind. The Automatism encourages total openness, the artist who draws unconsciously and repeat indefinitely the same shape. There is no metaphysical interpretation hides behind the works. The German Expressionism movement started in the early twentieth century art world, pre-WWI, presumably from Vincent Van Gogh’s “pioneering expressionist paintings like… Starry, Starry Night”(Encyclopaedia of Art History). It was a purely aesthetic movement at this time that sought to oppose the Impressionist movement, which imitated nature, by imposing unnatural, distorted images. Traditions and encounters even stated that, ““Although the origin of the name Dada is unclear, it is believed to be a deliberately nonsensical word.” This quote shows that the artists didn’t want their work to fit into a previous category, and were often trying to prove that art can arise from anything. The term Surrealism applies to Chagall, that is the term that was coined when Appolinaire when visiting his studio in 1913 murmured “Supernatural!”. This is not to say that Chagall was part of any Surrealist movement on the contrary he is against any style or movement. It used as a term where the artist has drawn upon consciously or unconsciously from the dream experience. It is clear in his works that he does not want any movement to restrict his expression and mobility. He is wholly against empathetic realism, of the Courbet, Impressionist or Cubist sort, yet he still uses Cubist devices and comes close to Impressionism. Chagall depicts a more dreamlike, story like content filled with symbolism (much of it traditional) in his paintings. He admired Manet, and drew great inspiration from Gauguin in his early years. He creates a style that was more universalistic and one that did not have any idealistic underpinnings.
Though some may view Abstract Expressionism and Surrealism as similar, the thing that made it fundamentally different, according to Motherwell, was that the artists worked more `directly' and `violently' and on a `much larger scale physically than the surrealists ever had.' (Page 40, David and Cecil) It also seems important to Motherwell to have a style that challenges the limits. `Of course this anticipated Pollock's drip style, but only in a very limited sense, i.e., limited to arcs. Surrealism and the surrealist movement is a ‘cultural’ movement that began around 1920’s, and is best known for its visual art works and writings. According to André Berton, the aim was “to resolve the previously contradictory conditions of dream and reality into an absolute reality, a super-reality” (Breton 1969:14). Surrealists incorporated “elements of surprise, unexpected juxtapositions and ‘non sequitur”. Hence, creating unnerving, illogical paintings with photographic precision, which created strange creatures or settings from everyday real objects and developed advanced painting techniques, which allowed the unconscious to be expressed by the self (Martin 1987:26; Pass 2011:30).
There are endless styles and themes in which artists can decide to paint in. Surrealism is a well known art movement that started in the 1900s. Surrealism was created to “change life” said Rimbaud or to “transform the world” said Marx and essentially that’s what it did. By eliminating logic, new boundaries were opened and a new focus was demonstrated by some artists. Surrealism was first seen in writing so this movement didn’t necessarily begin in the art field. But, it did help artists enhance their paintings with dream-like features and this was a form of expression. Along the way, the artists used this to create a spiritual orientation in their artwork. According to Cathrin Klingsöhr-Leroy, the definition of surrealism is “a pure psychic automatism by which it is intended to express, either verbally or in writing, or otherwise, the true function of thought. Thought dictated in the absence of all control exerted by reason, and outside all aesthetic or moral preoccupations.” Artists, at this point, were taking the concept of dreams and fantasy and experimenting with it. They applied it to their artwork creating surrealism.
