When New West began to investigate The Peoples Temple, it shook the members of the group and they attempted to fend it off by messaging the media group with several letters and calls saying “We hear New West is going to attack Jim Jones in print; don’t do that. He’s a good man who doesn’t good works.” After a bit of time passed, ex-members of The Peoples Temple Lee 7 came forward and had meetups with the media and stated “Life inside Peoples Temple was a mix of Spartan regimentation, fear and self-imposed humiliation.” The fear factor came into play by Jones forcing his group to attend orchestrated events and those who misbehaved slightly, were humiliated by being hit by a large wooden paddle and were forced to box with opponents chosen by Jones himself. These boxing matches would usually end in knockouts and being humiliated in front of your own “people” (Kilduff & Tracy 34). Humiliation was not a rare action in The Peoples Temple, many other ex-members spoke out about it including Elmer Mertle. He states that he quit his job as a chemical technician at a company and sold his house in hopes of finding a better live with Jones in Redwood Valley. At first, he saw that Jones was compassionate and caring, but slowly, Jones became a monster and inflicted fear and humiliation heavily onto his family. The punishments his family went through were first mental, then moved onto phyiscal as time went by. Jones would humiliate these people in front of the crowd in hundreds and lectured them saying it was going to be okay because after this punishment, they are now trusted and became a better person because of it. Public spankings were also a form of humiliation used and the Mertle family received hundreds of spankings by belts and even la... ... middle of paper ... ...le in that, Pack of young fools." Once Warner, a respected man of the village responded, Adams stopped talking and conformed with the rest of the village to fit in. In Jonestown, Christine Miller spoke out after realizing a mass suicide was not the brightest idea, “When we destroy ourselves, we’re defeated. We let them, the enemies, defeat us. I look at all the babies, and I think they deserve to live.” After her statement, a unidentified man responded with “Christine, your life has been extended to today. That you’re standing there is because of him.” Miller stopped responding after this and continued with the flow of the mass suicide. This is similar to the situation in The Lottery because someone attempted to speak out about something they thought was wrong but was shunned down by a fellow member and then they both continued to conform with the rest of the group.
The education of the youth establishes a precedent for the differences between the way Spartans and Athenians lead their lives. At age seven, training for the military began for all Spartan boys, they’re forced to leave their homes and go to military schools, where they endure all types of harsh training and discipline. The main lesson was learning to take pride in enduring pain and hardships. During their teenage years they were taught wrestling, ...
The People's Temple was a Christian doomsday cult founded and led by James Warren Jones (1931-1978). Jim Jones was not a fundamentalist pastor as many reports in the media and the anti-cult movement has claimed. He belonged to a mainline Christian denomination, having been ordained in the Christian Church/Disciples of Christ.
...s already small portions of food and horrible tasks given to those who didn’t obey Jim Jones. Also, Reverend jones clearly didn’t mind the fact that he was forcing more than nine hundred people to commit suicide, a third if them children. Being me, I feel like the way Jim Jones treated these people, and the way he led this cult compound was completely wrong. I feel like Peoples Temple was a humungous mistake. I also feel truly sorry for those who lose friends and family in this horrible event and for those who went through this. Although this is all over the Jim jones Massacre will forever be remembered and never be forgotten.

The other quiting of the Reeve in the Miller's Tale is when, once again, the carpenter is portrayed as a dullard by being totally oblivious to the situation; Allison, his wife, and a man named Nicholas, a man known locally for making love in secret, (which was his talent), are trying to have sexual laissons behind John's back. (MiLT 91). They get John to believe that a great flood, worse than Noah's is coming, and will destroy all of them. This fool by believeing this tale and following them with the preparations protects himself, even though no flood of any sort arises. This is the ultimat act of stupidity! The Reeve's Tale about the Miller is a perfect example of evil and trickery at it's best. The part being that in the end, the trickster becomes tricked over and over againt but the tables turn and the Miller is the real loser having lost his stolen flour and to add insult to injury, he finds out that his wife and daughter have been cuckolded especially after all the jargon about the following:
“Write the voices of others into your text.” In the book “They Say/ I Say” by Gerald Graff and Cathy Birkenstein, the conversation that they refer to is about academic writing. What makes someone become a better writer. Designing temples to help writers to enter “not only the world of academic thinking and writing, but also the wider worlds of civic discourse and work.” Besides, temples are as well needed to present in a clear structure and well develop the language to express what somebody wants to say. In addition, the temples implies in “They Say/ I Say” help someone’s writing become more original and creative. Graff and Birkenstein also explain that the most important part a conversation is to express someone’s ideas or knowledge as a response
Although The Peoples Temple ended when its followers committed a mass suicide, thcult was mostly successful because they gained hundreds of followers a year and helped to racially integrate hospitals and churches. The Peoples Temple was a church that eventually formed into a cult. They traveled to create a utopia with racial and social equality, on a plot in Guyana. This all came crashing down when Jim Jones started abusing drugs and eventually forced his memebers to poison them to
Analyzing Jonestown in terms of obedience and the power of the situation can help to explain why the people acted as they did. Once the Peoples Temple had moved to Jonestown, there was little the members could do other than follow Jim Jones's dictates. They were comforted by an authority of absolute power. They were l...
To understand the purpose of the cult, it is necessary to understand the creator’s motives and background. Son of a former soldier and Presbyterian minister, Marshall Herff Applewhite grew up in an extremely religious household. He was born on May 17, 1931, in Spur, Texas and seemed to have led a fairly normal life before founding the religious cult.3 He was a man who had many talents: he was an opera singer, an actor, a public speaker, an academic.4 In addition, the co-leader of the Heaven’s Gate cult was described by his family to have a charismatic character and a caring soul. In a 1997 interview with CNN, his sister recalls that “[Applewhite] was always a born leader and very charismatic. He could get people to believe anything."5 She also says about his personality that "He was quite the
Greetings everyone! It has come to my attention that the great religious leader, American prophet, Joseph Smith is dead, being attacked and hung by a drunken mob in Carthage, Illinois. This man died a martyr, widely known for his influential religious preaching in states of New York, Ohio, Missouri and Illinois. Being the founder of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and contributing to the converting of people into Mormonism, he vastly transformed people, turning them into large Mormon communities. Being put in such a position, Smith’s 39-year life has been full of exciting experiences.
The Shrine of Remembrance has a great historical significance in Victoria as it initially was the largest memorial Australia, until the Australian war Memorial was built in 1941. It is an embodiment of the devastating effect of the wars on the entire nation of Australia, which suffered the huge loss of lives in the country. The Shrine honours the service men and women as well as peace keepers from 1939 to the present day as it remains one of the many commemorative sites built following the war. Inside the site are commemorative forecourt, trees, statues, and memorials, all of which are a tribute to those who made sacrifices in the war effort. With all the items in the Shrine Reserve, the site is of archaeological significance as it contains
Roark undertakes this responsibility and manufactures an astounding temple yet is sued when he completes the project by Stoddard, who is guided by Toohey, in light of the fact that he proclaims the final product disobeys every proper image of a religious structure. Roark is discovered guilty and sentenced to pay for the modifications of the temple. Toohey's motivation is to pulverize Roark's image so future commissions would be inadequate on the account that the public would remember him being involved in a scandal and that he is viewed as an "enemy of
On November 18, 1978, a notorious religious organization lead by Jim Jones became international news. As a result of manipulation and isolation, Jim Jones influenced his followers to commit suicide. Not only, but his followers were utterly convinced that what they were doing was for a good cause, specifically, a political movement. With kool-aid and a dash of cyanide, 918 people, adults and children, ended their lives that day. The aftermath of this horrific event resulted in numerous documentaries, on of which being, Jonestown: The Life and Death of Peoples Temple. Created in 2006, this documentary gives a thorough and accurate account of the events that lead up to as well as occured that day.

Ancient Jerusalem was a holy center for the Hebrew people. (And it is a home of three religions, Islam, Judaism, and Christianity nowadays.) Jerusalem establishment as a holy space is depicted in the Bible. According to the Hebrew Bible, the ancient Israelites lived in Jerusalem because this city represents the center of the world. This city comes the connection point between the people and their God. The existence of theophanies, hierophanies and the “imago mundi” in the city make the city holy and becomes a sacred space. (And all of these signs appear in Jerusalem, so Jerusalem is one of the most recognized sacred spaces in the world.) This essay will provide evidence of God choosing Abraham
