And once the western media started sensationalizing the violence in Sierra Leone without any human context, people started relating Sierra Leone to civil war, madness and amputations only as that was all that was spoken about. So he wrote this book out o...

There was a war in Sierra Leone, Africa, from 1991 to 2002 where a rebel army stormed through African villages amputating and raping citizens left and right (“Sierra Leone Profile”). Adebunmi Savage, a former citizen of Sierra Leone, describes the reality of this civil war: In 1996 the war in Sierra Leone was becoming a horrific catastrophe. Children were recruited to be soldiers, families were murdered, death came easily, and staying alive was a privilege. Torture became the favorite pastime of the Revolutionary United Front rebel movement, which was against the citizens who supported Sierra Leone’s president, Ahmad Tejan Kabbah.

For over 150 years, present day Sierra Leone served as an important colonial asset to the British. Under British control in 1808, the capital city Freetown was used as a naval base for antislavery patrols. The British governor who controlled the Gold Coast was one of many Europeans to take up residency in Freetown from 1821 to 1874. Additionally, Fourah Bay College was established in 1827 and sparked a major period of educational improvement all throughout the West Coast of Africa. For over 100 years, this college served as the only European-style university south of the Sahara Dessert. Perhaps with assistance from the established college, a series of revolts began to occur throughout Sierra Leone after a hut tax was placed on all residents of the country. Responding to the enraged inhabitants, a constitution was proposed in 1951 and the people began gaining power from the British. Just 9 years later, Sir Milton Margai returns from London as Sierra Leone’s first Prime Minister after had discussing constitutional actions with the British. On April 27, 1961, Sierra Leone became an independent nation with Sir...

Once they gained access to these fields it helped finance future exploration round the southern tip of Africa and reach the trade markets of the Indian Ocean. They purchased silk, spices, perfumes and other goods, return it to Europe and sold it for a profit. They built the fort of Elmina in West Africa to protect their interests from other European countries who were also seeking fortune in Africa. They first sailed into the important towns and demanded the rulers to become Portuguese subjects and pay them tributes. When the rulers refused the Portuguese would raid the towns until they gave into them. They built a fortress called fort Jes...
