Mephastophilis is the devil that Faustus summons through his initial magical experiments. He is the same devil that was cast from paradise with his master Lucifer. In `Dr Faustus,' Marlowe creates Mephastophilis' personality from his own imagination, which causes Mephastophilis to be almost human at times. Mephastophilis is bound to Faustus because Faustus sold his soul to Lucifer for twenty-four years of Mephastophilis' service. During this time Mephastophilis sometimes openly despises Faustus' folly in disbelieving him, yet at other times Mephastophilis is like a companion or servant to Faustus as the scholars used to be.
These two aspects to Faustus' character can be shown through his appearance, actions and his language in particular. Mephastophilis is a terrifying devil in a human's eye and when Faustus first sees him he is disgusted by the sight of him as it is shown when he says:
"I charge thee to return and change thy shape,
Thou art too ugly to attend on me;
Go and return an old Franciscan Friar." (Scene3, lines24-26)
So Mephastophilis in the image of a devil is too ugly for Faustus too look at and surely must have scared him. Mephastophilis obeys Faustus and comes back as a Franciscan Friar. There is irony in this because a Franciscan Friar is a very committed Christian, but Mephastophilis is a devil and so it is ironic that a devil is pretending to be a strong Christian. Here it is also quite likely that Marlowe as an atheist is mocking the Catholic Church.

When Mephastophilis tells Faustus of how he was thrown from paradise and that he has to suffer a "thousand hells," makes the audience feel sympathy towards him. The important thing is though that Mephastophilis' personality has been created by Marlowe and therefore a real devil may have been completely different and humans would not have felt sympathy for them. The audience do admire Mephastophilis since he has such strong loyalty to Lucifer.
So overall Mephastophilis can be seen as a terrifying devil, a tempter, loyal disciple of Lucifer, Intellectual match for Faustus, an honest character and a companion to Faustus in the play. The audience do feel sympathy for him at times and admire his loyalty.
Throughout history, the Devil has constantly tempted people. That much can be agreed upon. However, the similarities between these two works also show that the reason the Devil has tempted people is actually constant as well, to enlarge his kingdom. Unfortunately, their motives for enlarging this kingdom are not so alike. Enter Mephistopheles, and all semblance of seriousness is lost. Introduced as a demon, and arguably the Devil, he is witty, cynical, and in general a caricature of what religionists throughout the ages have labeled pure evil.
Faustus was neither tricked nor deceived, rather his conceit and over-reaching desire for knowledge assured him a place in Hell. If but for an instant he was to look past his pride, he would have seen Mephistopheles’ hidden approbation for heaven in his discourse on the cosmos, amongst the numerous other omens the Doctor was presented with. It was only in his final hour, after laying his soul to waste, Faustus was able to see his responsibility in condemning himself to Lucifer. As the final line Faustus screams while being dragged to hell implies, “I will burn my books,” he has finally acknowledged his egotism, which rested in intellect.
Having attained all that he desires from the knowledge of man, Marlowe’s character Faustus turns to the only remaining school of thought that he feels he must master which is the art of necromancy. In his pursuits, he manages to summon the devil Mephistopheles, arch demon of hell, and strikes a deal to trade his immortal soul with Lucifer in exchange for being granted an infinite amount of power and knowledge that extends even beyond the limits of human understanding. However in the process of negotiating the terms of his pact, it becomes clear that Faust is in a constant state of uncertainty in terms of whether he should repent and forsake the arrangement or simply go through with it. This underlying theme of internal struggle is introduced very early and reappears in later acts with the appearance of established binaries that suggest a theme of division not only among the character of John Faustus, but within the written text as a whole. This suggests that Faustus is meant to serve as a symbol for the divided nature of man and the consequences of failing to negotiate the struggles that are a result of the divided self.
Mephistopheles was very smart and creative when it came to luring in his victims of evil. In "Outside the City Gate", Mephistopheles disguised himself as a dog and followed Faust home. Faust knew this dog was evil. He said the dog was "circling around" him and "a wake of fire's streaming behind him" (lines 1175-1179). Every time Faust would begin reading the Bible, the dog would bark as a sign of disbelief and wrongs about it. The next day, in Faust's study, the devil showed up again, but this time in the form of a nobleman tempting Faust to "a life of limitless wealth and pleasure" in return for his soul for eternity.
Faustus' hunger for immediate gratification suggests immense self-torment and self-denial. Weighing his options at each instant of time, he maximizes his pleasure and minimizes his pain, apparently discounting the implications of his decisions on his prospects and happiness in the future. Rebelling against God, he invites the devil's temptations, hoping to obtain an offer like Satan's to Jesus in the desert wilderness. One understands why Satan imputes an infinite value to Christ's soul. However, why does Faustus' soul warrant twenty-four years of service by Mephostophilis?

Marlowe reflects ambition in the character of Faustus to deter the audience from being ambitious, and over-reaching their place in the ‘Chain of Being’. However, if Marlowe chose to be ‘dangerously over-ambitious’ and regarded himself as this, it is likely that he may have written ‘Dr. Faustus’ differently, not viewing ambition in such a negative way. Whatever Marlowe’s view on ambition was, it is not made clear in the play, through Faustus or other characters. Certain aspects of his personality are indeed reflected in Faustus, which make reading the play and exploring Faustus as a character even more intriguing.

This play is about how Faustus puts on a performance for the Emperor and the Duke of Vanholt. The main thesis or climax of this play is when Faustus two friends Valdes and Cornelius who are magicians, teaches him the ways of magic. Faustus uses this magic to summon up a devil named Mephistophilis. Faustus signs over his soul to Lucifer (Satan), in return to keep Mephistophilis for 24 years. Undeterred by this depression, we see his pride has not diminished as he declares he is “cleverer than these stuffed shirts, these Doctors, M.A.s, Scribes and Priests, I’m not bothered by a doubt or a scruple, I’m not afraid of Hell or the Devil” (Goethe 633).
