Essentially having a rigorous class schedule while being in a sport and doing community service demands a great deal of time spent. Having to manage all three while having to maintain the highest grade point average at times leads to doing things the effortless way instead of the strenuous way. We are all victims of passing an exam due to cramming the night before. However, being victims each and everyone of us know we should have taken the extra time and given up sacrifices to studying instead of cram as we really don’t understand the subject being examined instead we base ourselves on memorization. There is a prodigious unorthodoxness among knowledge and information when it comes to learning. Knowledge is the main concept one should always attribute as it connects fragments over information creating a mental map.
Knowledge does not openly mean to know. However knowledge is facts, information, and skills seized by a person through either experience or education through the practical understanding of the subject or in another words a justified true belief. There are four ways of knowledge consisting of language, perception, reason, and emotion. Knowing is someone told me whereas you seeing it is perception. Reason comes from you working it out to whereas emotion is it just seems obvious. This connects to passing an exam by cramming the night before and feeling like you didn’t understand anything as knowledge is greater than information. Knowledge stays in your brain as you know yourself why, how, when, and why your answer is conclusive. It connects fragments of information in order to construct a whole some idea. William Cronon’s article “Only Connect’: The Goals of a Liberal Education” was a fascinating read as it exemplified that what made an individual a good student was not a proficiency in certain subjects, but rather a set of ten qualities that made a good character. My top strength of intellection is certainly an asset in college, at least in terms of academic success. One of Cronon’s characteristics was that a good student respects rigor, especially in the pursuit of the truth, something that I endeavor to do anytime I am in an academic setting. Every single class I have ever signed up for has been challenging in some way, not only because it looks good to take the challenging course, but also for my own benefit. I would have gained nothing without some degree of challenge, for example, if I had not taken an extremely demanding biology course in high school, I would not have discovered how much I love biology and want to go into a biology-based career. Another one of Cronon’s values that I hope to embody is the understanding of how to get things done, something that I have related to my deliberative strength. I am the first to admit that I am a horrible procrastinator however, I also will always get my assignment done whether it is an essay or simply doing laundry. According to the reading, Writing as a Mode of Learning by Janet Emig, knowledge is described as “an act of knowing that enters as a passionate contribution of the person to know what is being known, which is a coefficient that is no mere imperfection but a vital component of a person’s knowledge.” Essentially, knowledge is composed of what a person, association or discourse community knows about what is already known in their area of expertise or fully know what could occur in a certain situation, similar to how a rhetor must prepare and know what rhetorical situations might occur at any moment during their speech or writing. Knowledge is created to prepare for various outcomes and situations as goals are being constructed in a discourse community.
There is no concrete definition of knowledge, but there is a definition that is widely agreed upon, or a standard definition. This definition may be widely accepted, but just like most things in philosophy, it is controversial and many disagree with it. The definition involves three conditions that must be met in order for one to truly say that they know something to be true. If one were to state: “The Seattle Mariners have never won a world series,” using the standard definition would look like this: first, the person believes the statement to be true. Second, the statement is in fact true. Third, the person is justified in believing the statement to be true. The three conditions are belief, truth, and justification. There are the “necessary and sufficient conditions” for knowledge. Necessary and sufficient conditions are linked to conditional statements, ‘if x, then y’ statements.
Growing up, my parents never expected perfection but expected that I try to accomplish my best. The effort I’ve put forth in learning has been reflected in my grades throughout my high school career. I’ve entered myself in vigorous course work such as AP Government and AP English to become well prepared for my college career, all while maintaining a 4.4 grade point average this year. Not only do I engage in AP classes, but up until this year I had no study halls. I wanted my day to be packed full of interesting classes that I would enjoy learning about. My grades and choice of classes prove the effort that I put forth in my learning. Working hard now can only pay off in the future. Learning now creates a well-rounded human being. Working to learn is why I am so dedicated to my studies now.
In other words, I know what I signed up for when I wanted to take on a big load even though at times like the day of the AP test I feel somewhat overwhelmed by it all. The author says sports serve as a distraction in an environment in which academics should reign far superior. From my experiences, like the one last May, I have learned that it is up to me to excel at whatever I am attempting to do. I know not to take on more than I can realistically do, but that does not mean that I do so little that I never push myself like the day of the AP test . I have had several friends in high school who have done great balancing the two activities; one of my closest friends is a Division 1 athlete at Clemson University, the biggest stage for a student athlete. My senior year my other friend Wayne was not so great at being accountable for all of his work load. As football season being to start, Wayne’s grades in advanced courses such as Calculus and Chemistry begin to dip. At this point he essentially had two options: Quit football or sign up for less rigorous courses. Taking no action, Wayne suffered the consequences of his own irresponsibility. His options were very limited when it came to attending a college of his choice despite having several football scholarship offers, but it was all his fault. In the novel Frankenstein, Mary Shelley considers knowledge as a “dangerous” factor. The danger of it is proved throughout the actions of the characters Robert Walton, Victor Frankenstein, and the creature. The characters all embody the theme of knowledge in different ways. Shelley supports her opinion on knowledge by using references from the Bible and Paradise Lost.

If it was not for Frederick Douglass’s learning to read and write, he may have been lived his entire life as a slave, a mere “brute” that no one knows of today. He may have died as an ignorant servant, always submissive under the hands of his merciless white master. He may have never seen the light, success, or integrity that comes with knowledge and freedom. These are all subtle, yet mind-blowing details that were emphasized through Douglass’s text. In his narrative, Douglass portrays how he went against the odds by self-educating himself, which was an act that required great determination and caution on the side of a mere slave, for education was considered a tremendous danger towards the white, slave-holding society. Because he loathed the injustice of slavery and he was willing to risk his life to rid himself of it, Douglass never ceased to think of freedom. Frederick Douglass's memoir, Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass, truly portrays that through one’s determination and the aid of a kind Providence, knowledge becomes a superpower against the weapon of ignorance as it serves as a crossroad between the appalling chains of slavery and the “silver trump of freedom” in a prejudiced, Pre-Civil War society.
The general concept of ‘information’ is used in a confused manner. By some it is seen as something we distil from data in order to make decisions, and to a point this could be a true observation. By others it is seen in terms of the understanding that we gain from messages or the knowledge that one person communicates to another and the meanings we create and exchange.
When I think about knowledge the first thing that comes to my mind is education. I believe that knowledge comes to people by their experiences in life. In other words, life is an instrument that leads me to gain knowledge. Many people consider that old people are wise because they have learned from good and bad experiences throughout their lives. Education requires work, dedication and faith to gain knowledge. We acquired knowledge through the guidance of from parents, role models, college/University teachers and life experiences.
Kralovec, author of The End of Homework argues that doing homework during high school has little or no effect on successful study skills of students in college. College students have only a few hours of class a week and lots of daytime hours in which to study. She says the college schedule is nowhere as grueling as in high school. In addition, the average adult does not return home from the office with three or more hours of work to complete (Kralovec). When "busy work" assignments are given carelessly and frequently, it causes students to lose interest in the subject. Negative results can also occur when a student is not able to complete his or her homework. Many times they will resort to copying homework, having others do their assignments, or cheating on tests. Bad habits such as these are likely to follow kids through their lives and have an effect on their moral judgment. With no consequences to these actions students will almost always take the easy way out when it comes to homework
