Earth is a planet is made up of a mixture of oxygen, nitrogen, carbon dioxide and several other gaseous elements that have created and sustained life as we know it. The universe is a vast space made of matter that varies from the smallest cosmic particle to a massive galaxy. Within one of billions of galaxies is home to planet earth, which is one of 7 planets in the Milky Way Galaxy, all orbiting a star. Based on what human life is conscious of, Earth is the only residence of intelligent life in the universe. Could planet Earth be the only planet able to sustain intelligent life or are there other planets with similar chemical make-up to do so? Or could it be that there are other elements unknown to humans that can create and sustain what we consider “intelligent life”? If possible, would these living beings be anything like humans or far different beyond imaginable? These are questions scientific research can only analyze and attempt to answer.

There is a cultural assumption that there are many alien civilizations in the universe. However, what do we really know about extraterrestrial life? With recent findings of water on Mars and the discovery of Trappist-1, there could be hope for extraterrestrial life out in the universe. Even though the water on Mars is frozen under the polar ice caps and Trappist-1 could be far from finding any alien life, there are still many articles supporting the research and looking forward to finding additional news. In the article “Could the TRAPPSIT-1 worlds harbor alien life?’ written by Liz Fuller-Wright, she reports the announcement of astronomers that they found a miniature solar system of seven Earth-sized planets. Finding life in our solar system could potentially answer the questions humanity has been asking for thousands of years. Sarah Seager, a professor at MIT, mentioned some of these thought provoking questions, “why are we here? Why does our universe exist? How did Earth form and evolve? How and why did life originate and populate our planet?” Answers to these questions could give humanity a deeper understanding of who we are and what our place in the universe is. Steven Dick believes that humanity has “… deep psychological yearnings for companionship, superior wisdom, or ‘an ineradicable desire to see the skies filled with life’.” Those opposed may argue that a biological universe will have little effect on humanity’s understanding of our place in the universe because a biological universe simply does not exist. One may argue that life is exceedingly complex and the odds of conditions being just right for the production and the sustainment of life are slim. The war in Vietnam ranged from 1956 to 1975, within these years many unconventional methods of warfare were used, such as “Agent Orange”, guerilla warfare and even events such as the “My Lai Massacre” occurred. The Vietnam War was a proxy war in which the United States fought the North Vietnamese who were backed by the USSR, we did not win the Vietnam war due to a lack of clear goals, and the impossibility to combat the North Vietnamese soldiers who by day were regular civilians but by night were using guerilla attacks on U.S. soldiers. Throughout the United States involvement in Vietnam, there were many adverse effects on our own lives, including the large increase of political, social and economic tension. The Vietnam War heightened social, political and economic tensions by causing inflation and a growing budget deficit of the United States. For the social tensions, it caused for the first time people protesting against a war and a lack of faith in the government due to being lied to. And as for political tensions the first lottery draft in history stressed many politicians due to an outraged population.

Should we as humans expect to find intelligent life elsewhere in the Universe? There are many reasons for and against this concept, but first we should trace just how our terrestrial life started.
I feel there must be extraterrestrial intelligence. Even if not in our galaxy, in the universe somewhere. Someone once said, "Absence of proof, is not proof of absence." I think he is correct. While we do not know that aliens exist, we do not that they do not exist. Considering the many UFO sightings, most of them are probably conjured, but at least one had to have really happened because the idea is too crazy to be thought of out of nowhere. Some scientists argue that the chances of alien intelligence are slim since the circumstances that produced life were all just strange coincidences, all the same circumstances happening somewhere else is extremely unlikely. I think it is just arrogance to assume we are the only intelligent life in the universe.
One of the most common unanswered questions scientists find themselves asking is "Is there life on other planets?" Since the first famously documented UFO sighting in 1947, the idea of extra-terrestrial life has been debated almost non-stop. The subject has inspired many TV programs, such as The X-Files, and films (Mars Attacks, Independence Day, and the Men in Black films to name but a few).
