Humans have difficulties to cast doubt on the already established institutions of our society. In Quebec, everybody is obligated to attempt school, from the age of 5 to 16 and it is obviously going to stay that way. The system has been implanted for so long that we can't even think of the possibility it may changes. But is the education system going well? We live in a society where we are surrounded by people telling us that school/education and being educated is the only way to succeed. However, the school system is not up to the standards we want it to uphold. There are three issues we discuss the most which are the government, the student, and the teacher. In John Taylor Gatto 's essay “Against School”, we see the inside perspective of the educational system from the view of a teacher. In “I Just Wanna Be Average”, an essay written by Mike Rose, we hear a student 's experience of being in a vocational class in the lower level class in the educational system when he was supposed to be in the higher class. Both Gatto and Rose give their opinions on how the educational system is falling apart. Gamma-hydroxybutyrate (GHB) is a depressant that affects the central nervous system. It was first created in the 1920’s and was under development as an anesthetic agent in the 1960’s. GHB is produced naturally in the human body in very small amounts, but its purpose or function is unclear. The drug came on the scene recently as a club drug at all-night dance parties and raves. GHB causes both an intense, euphoric high and sometimes it even causes hallucinations. GHB has caused many young people to require emergency medical care. Because the liquid is odorless and colorless, GHB diluted in drinks is virtually undetectable and sometimes is slipped unknowingly into someone else's drinks. This is why the drug got the nickname of the “date rape drug” because would-be rapists would slip the drug into an unsuspecting victim’s glass and then take advantage of their compromised state.
The fifteenth century was a gruesome era in world history. Church and state were not separated which caused many problems because the Church officials were often corrupt. The story of Joan of Arc, portrayed by George Bernard Shaw, impeccably reflects the Church of the 1400’s. Joan, a French native, fought for her country and won many battles against England. But Joan’s imminent demise came knocking at her door when she was captured by the English. She was charged with heresy because the armor she wore was deemed for men only but she justified her actions by stating that God told her to do it. Today, Joan of Arc would be diagnosed schizophrenic because of the voices in her head but she would still be respected for serving in the military. But in the fifteenth century, she was labeled as nothing more than a deviant. She was tried and the Inquisitor characterized her as a beast that will harm society. Through his sophistic reasoning, loaded diction, and appeals to pathos and ethos, the Inquisitor coaxed the court into believing Joan was a threat to society and she had to pay the ultimate price.
Throughout the 20th and 21st centuries, the American educational system has undergone much transition in response to our changing society. Though there have been many problems raised throughout the years in regard to what our school systems should be teaching our children, there have also been many developments.
The renowned writer Mark Twain once said, "Surely the [one] who invented the first religion ought to be the first [one] damned". In the novel The Grapes of Wrath, by John Steinbeck, protagonist Jim Casy shares Twain's perspective on religion. Casy, a former reverend reunites with Tom Joad, an ex-convict. After losing touch with his religious beliefs, he finds faith in the "Human Spirit". Steinbeck's portrayal of Jim Casy as Jesus Christ serves to reveal his purpose of the novel, which is to persuade humans to become self-reliant. The author places emphasis on the moral obligations of society, which is to serve and assist each other, and also extends to the idea that humans are capable of becoming their own saviors. Individuals are not to depend in a divinity for a solution to the corruption and dishonesty in their society, and must use their abilities to find such answers within themselves.
Professor Sugata Mitra does not claim that the current educational school systems are broken, simply that they are outmoded. Drilling specific faculties and relentless examination of a string of memorized facts tend to make for a very specific skill set. A skill set with is becoming increasingly obsolete. An Industry producing cookie-cutter workers while letting down vast numbers of otherwise perfect capable individuals. The shape our Educational systems impose on students no longer correspond to shape of their world. As Professor Mitra puts it: “In a networked age, we need schools, not structured like factories, but like clouds.”
The quality of education given in today's schools has declined since the idea of schools began. Currently students are graduating without being able to read or write. The blame lies on the teachers, government and every American citizen for not speaking up to bring change sooner. Only in the most recent years has there been any will to change the system.(Sharma)
The education system has been a controversial issue among educators. Requirements of school do not let student choose what they want to study for their future. It’s a big issue to force student study specific curriculums, which don’t help them improve, and what they like to create something. Educators choose a general system for education to all students which based on general knowledge. Intelligent or genius students have to be in that system of education, which doesn’t let them improve their creativity. Educators attempt to change that system to make it better, but their changing was not that great to be an example for the world. Also, did that change qualify education system to compete other systems or not? In some examples and reasons have been made me agree with some of points from Gatto’s and Edmunson’s and disagree them.
Education is a very sensitive topic to discuss among adults. Many adults want the education to be based on a system of ideas that is progressive (which is a system high in the aspect of individuality), some want perennialism (which is the teaching of philosophies that have stood the test of time over hundreds of years), and some, like myself, want to take it back to the way it used to be (essentialism). Education as defined by Webster’s Collegiate Dictionary is “the action or process of education or being educated.” I believe that the way education was presented in the past worked well and that education should remain to be taught the same.
The United States of America has had a long history of education systems regarding what should be taught in schools and by what methods. In the mid-1800s in the United States there was a struggle between private and public school systems of who would get funding money, public schools won that struggle and most of the education funding went to the public schools (Wooster 5). But after that struggle was solved another one rose, what should be taught in public schools (Wooster 11). The education debate of what should be taught in public schools led to a movement called “progressive education” that would have two [parts]” (Wooster 11). “The first movement changed the way American schools were organized and controlled” and “the second wave altered the school curriculum” (Wooster 11). The problem of what should be taught in public schools has been a problem in the education system until now. Many reformations have come up to try and solve the struggle of what should be taught in school such as the “Outcome Based Education” system (Sykes 242), the No Child Left Behind program, and now the Common Core State standards. All of these reformations and counter reformations have led the education system in this country downhill, each one making it worse and worse (Sykes 225). All of the programs trying to fix our education system has failed due to lack of teacher participation, kids’ apathy towards education and learning, and the “dumbing” down of school curriculum (Joy). These are also the reasons why the Common core state standards are not succeeding today. Education is a vital part of society. It serves the beneficial purpose of educating our children and getting them ready to be productive adults in today's society. But, the social institution of education is not without its problems. Continual efforts to modify and improve the system need to be made, if we are to reap the highest benefits that education has to offer to our children and our society as a whole.
