Friends: our novel kinship during medical school.
It is said that friendship is a single soul dwelling in two bodies. Well, everybody must have friends don’t they? One is in great affliction if one thinks that one can live by his own. Most of us medical students are studying abroad or quite far from our family. Some of us even went as far as crossing continents and studying in Europe or the Middle East. One cannot help to stop and pause to argue that the next closest to us after our family would be our friends. Friends or some call it as pal, buddy, comrade and mate are literally defined as those who are close to us, share the same likings as us and willing to accept us for who we are.
The purpose of this article is to argue and emphasize the idea of friends as a great social system or even as a support system. Friendship during medical school could last longer than just the day of our convocation or the day we part from each other.
Friendship conceives itself the day that we first say hi and gave the unconditional smile to each other. The day we first put in our hearts that we are going to sail through this medical boon and bane together. I wish to put forward a few points on how friendship affects your life in medical school and how it is going to affect the kind of doctor you are going to be, God willing one day.
1. Friendship helps us to be more open to sharing and caring towards each other. Friendship helps to make people become more altruistic towards each other and we really need this during medical school and later in our life as doctors, (e.g. sharing notes, common examination questions and learning aids.)
2. Friendship helps us diversify our knowledge. Knowledge is a critical component of creating an excellent doctor. ...

Before I finish, I would like to quote Lao Tzu, he said “The wise man does not lay up treasure. The more he gives to others, the more he has for his own”. In the spirit of sharing of caring, I wish to whisper heartily to my fellow comrades and medical students out there, success is not sweet if it was tasted alone. If you have questions, notes or study tips up your sleeves that have not been shared with others, share it now. Always be the friend you want to have, if you want to have a loving friend, be warm. If you want to have a selfless friend, do not be selfish. Be in the company of those who can lift you higher, a friend who studies with you, not just watch movies with you. A friend, who accepts you, accepts your shortcomings and accepts your changes and transformations throughout med school. Like Chucky said, I’m your friend till the end.
Friendship is undoubtedly one of the most important elements in the books of Aristotle’s ethical principles. Aristotle takes the idea of friendship to a serious degree. He categorizes them into three groups or types of friendships. This report will attempt to define each type of friendship as well as identify the role of friendship in a society.
I would define friendship as complete trust and love between two people. Many people believe that this kind of behavior is reciprocated between two individuals without any expectations. A friend is someone who also provides you with support and whom you can rely on to celebrate special moments with. A friend also comes with many great attributes; such as loyalty, honesty, compassion, trust, and morality. Today’s friend is viewed as someone who shares happiness, common values, history, and equality with another. For example, Aristotle and Cicero both wrote dialogues about friendship and its significance on mankind. Therefore, the key issues that will be discussed are: their views on the similarities of friendship, the differences between friends,
From a young age, most people have gone through many relationships with other people who were not their family. Thus, we often acknowledge these relationships as friendships. But the word friend is too broad, so people categorize their friends into several types. In her book “Necessary Losses: The Lovers, Illusions, Dependencies and Impossible Expectations That All of Us Have to Give Up in Order to Grow”, Judith Viorst divided friendships into six types. Those are convenience friends, special interest friends, historical friends, crossroad friends, cross-generational friends and close friends.
Conclusively, the similarities of friendship and virtue allow the two states to correspond with one another in a happy life. The purpose of friendship is not only to coexist with virtue but also, by the actions of friends, virtue and friendship strengthen one another, making happiness all the more easy to attain because of it. Aristotle sums it up nicely, by saying “the friendship of decent people is decent, and increases the more often they meet. And they seem to become better still from their activities and their mutual correction. For each molds the other in a what they approve of, so that you will learn what is noble from noble people (1172a11-14).”
Philosophers have discuss and debate about friendship and the true meaning to be a friend to others Aristotle have given requirements as well as qualities a friend possession within different types of friendships. He debates that a good man does not need friends but the points he brings up proves that a good man can not live a pleasant life in solitary.
My personal definition of "friendship" is a feeling or emotion expressed in such a way that another feels wanted and important, a relationship between a person or persons where everyone has some companion to talk to when their in need of one. I would define friends as people whom you can have several types of relations with and feel several emotions for that person. Someone that one might go to in time of need. However, friendships differ between people. For example, the friendship that someone may have between them and their parents would be different than the friendship they might have with someone their age. There are many different friendships that people have. Friendships can exist between best friends, friends, lovers, children, parents, siblings, and many more. All of these differ in some way.
Friendship is an interpersonal relationship between two people that is mutually productive and can be characterized by mutual positive regard. Friendship should enhance the potential of each person involved and should only be productive. You must like each other in order to call it a friendship, and
There are many valuable things in life like family, sports, school but what about friendship? To live life without friendship is something no one should ever go through. Friendship is a necessity to living a successful life. Friendship occurs when someone is a supporter, gives assistance, and is attached to someone all the while genuinely taking care of them when they are hurt (The definition of friend, 1995-2002). A good and healthy friendship can be defined fro individuals as when someone has his or her own support system, a friend being loyal, and will always have genuine and mutual trust.
I grew up in the south-eastern part of Nigeria where both the nuclear and extended family is close-knit. The gentle but professional way my uncle, a family physician took care of any ill member of our family resonated early in my life and I wanted to be a doctor like him. I always looked forward to going to his small practice during which I would ask him as many questions as my young mind could muster about medicine. After I gained admission into medical school, the journey from the pre-clinical years of understanding how the human body functions to the clinical years of seeing how that fund of knowledge transformed a sick person’s life caused me to gain a deep respect for the profession. I enjoyed all my rotations and learned so much from them. However, my first day in the medical ward remains indelible in my mind. The empathic way my
The journey of life follows a predetermined pattern; we evolve from needing influence and guidance to finally reaching that point where our lives are up to us. I consider myself very lucky up to this point in my journey. Some people become sidetracked and wind up on a far different course than initially planned, but the detours I made have only assisted in embellishing the individual instead of devouring it.
Dakota is tall and confidant, he looks like someone who has always known what they’ve wanted. The stress lines, on his forehead, though, show that he has struggled to reach this point in his life. I expected him to be serious, and my assumptions weren’t wrong. However, he made himself accommodating, and proved that although pre-med students are serious about their studies they can also be approachable. As a four-year student in UCR, Dakota Salazar provided me with great insight of what it means to be a student interested in UC Riverside’s medical
Friendship is the most wonderful relationship that anyone can have. Ideally a friend is a person who offers love and respect and will never leave or betray us. Friends can tell harsh truths when they must be told. There are four different types of friends: True friends, Convenient friends, Special interest friends, and historical friends. To have friendship is to have comfort. In times of crisis and depression, a friend is there to calm us and to help lift up our spirits.
Friendship is a relationship that all the individuals can create by themselves. Though it is not a god gifted relationship like that of the relationship of a mother, father, sister, brother or any of the other family but still it is one of the best relations an individual can possess. People who have true friends consider themselves as the luckiest individuals on earth.
Friendship is one of the most important things you can get out of life. It’s something that everyone has to have because without it, we would all go insane. Just think if no one talked to each other and we never made friends, this world would be a ticking time bomb. Studies say humans need friendships and love to survive. So friendship is a big part of your life.
Friendship is a word we all know well, and most of us assume we have friends. But do we? The Dictionary defines Friendship as, ” being friends with someone: A connection or bond between friends:" friendship has individual rights and privileges. To me, Friends are those who take the duties, obligations, and responsibilities of association. Friendship is not with someone you just met even though people think that someone is their friend after a day By definition, friendship is something that lasts for lifetime someone you can depend and talk to through anything. However,
