In class, we have read a couple of Flannery O’ Connor’s short stories which include A Good Man is Hard to Find, Good Country People, and Revelations. After reading these stories, I noticed that Flannery O’ Connor changes the story but in a sense keeps the same main characters in every story. The main things that change between these characters are how they decide to handle a situation and their names; the things that do not change are often the outlook that they have on the world. I noticed the grandma from A Good Man is Hard to Find and Ruby Turpin from Revelations follow the criteria that I listed above. Throughout this paper, I am going to discuss the similarities and differences between the grandma and Ruby Turpin. The Grandma from A Good Man is Hard to Find appears to be a bigot. This is represented in the part of the story when the family is in their car on the way to Florida. The grandmother points out a small African American child standing beside a small shack to her grandchildren as they pass by she says to her granddaughter, June Star, “Oh look at the cute little pickaninny!” (368). June star looks back at the young black child and makes the comment that the child was not wearing any pants and the grandma tries to explain to June that he probably did not own any pants because African American who lived out in the backcountry did not have it as good as they had it Then in the next breath, the grandma starts to talk about how she would like to paint a picture of the small African American child. Even though the grandmother does not come right out and say that she is a bigot, readers can tell by the way she does not feel bad in the situation concerning the child that cannot even afford a pair of pants. She also seems t... ... middle of paper ... ...pin saw got through to her and will start to care more for others. The character does not really learn anything that the reader, knows of as the grandmother did. In conclusion, the characters have the same morals after reflecting on the stories. They both think that they are higher up in the world than everyone else and that is the most important thing. The grandmother from A Good Man is Hard to Find realizes that it is not the most important thing in the world to be above everyone else and that it is important to connect with people and find common ground. Mrs. Turpin is somewhere in the middle with holding herself above everyone else because she is really confused by what she saw. She believed that she was the best so I think she is in shock. Flannery O’ Connor modeled these characters after one another because they are just too similar to be a coincidence.
