Race has had a major impact on our society in every single aspect of our lives. Racism is taken to an even larger scale in a sports setting. Emotions are high and people say things about other people without thinking. This is not something that has just started to occur; these things have been happening for many, many years. Sport brings out a whole different type of person whether it is the player or even a fan. Whichever it may be, both have a significant impact on how racism is involved in sport. Racism 70 years ago was a very difficult time for the African American culture. Back then “the only difference between the black man shining shoes in the ghetto and the black sprinter is that the shoeshine man is a nigger and the sprinter is a fast nigger.”(counterpunch.com) The sports world is more diverse than it was back then, but has it truly changed? The sports industry may have allowed blacks to start participating in sports, but racism within the sport is still the exact same. Between Muhammad Ali and Richard Sherman the changes that have been made have not been significant enough for the black community in sport feel 100 percent accepted. There are multiple reasons I believe that there is still racism in the sports world and that it is still the same as it was then. My main points for this are name calling, discrimination and stereotypes. First I will start with name calling. During the 1960s, an African American athlete was greeted everywhere they went by a negative name. Perry Wallace, Vanderbilt's standout forward who became the first black varsity player in the all-white Southeastern Conference in 1967-68 recalled, “I'm talking racial stuff, people threatening your life ... calling you nigger, 'coon,' `shoe polish.' The fir... ... middle of paper ... ...ed him to play defensive back rather than quarterback, his natural position.(newsone) This has been a constant struggle in the football world. The judgment aspect of sport because of color has not changed in the past 60 years. Concluding, I believe that racism in sport has changed slightly but not to an extent to where I believe it is where it needs to be. I believe that sport is still very negative to minorities and it should clean up multiple things including my main points: name calling, discrimination, and stereotypes. These three things are a very important aspect in sport in my opinion because it would not only affect how the sport is played, but I also believe it would change how our society views each other. Racism in the sporting world is still hanging around all the way from Muhammad Ali in the 1960s, all the way to today with Richard Sherman in the 2010s.
