Humans have only discovered less than five percent of the ocean, while the ocean makes up seventy percent of our world. Even though we have explored so little of it, we have found very interesting creatures such as giant squids, yeti crabs, and zombie worms. None of these animals are similar in any way, not even their habitats, appearances, or diets. However they use these factors to be able to survive in sometimes extreme conditions.
The giant squid, zombie worm, and yeti crab all live in completely different parts of the ocean. For example, the zombie worms were first discovered by accident, on the ocean floor off the coast of California. They were discovered in 2002 by scientists at the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute. The giant

squid however, can be found anywhere around the world besides polar or tropical seas, and they prefer continental shelves and island slopes. They also reside 500 to 1,000 meters beneath the ocean’s surface. Yeti crabs are a recent discovery, they were found in the Southern Pacific near Antarctica, 7,200 feet beneath the sea’s surface. This chain of hydrothermal vents have only been explored by scientists very recently. The yeti crab’s climate is extremely hot and extremely cold simultaneously, this is because two continental plates collide which causes cold water and molten rocks to collide. The crabs gather in piles around these vents. As stated in the article Deep-Sea Vents “Gathered in heaps around the thermal vents, white crabs wave their claws together in unison.” The water in this environment can reach seven hundred degrees fahrenheit, while other spots are freezing. These examples show that these sea creatures are able to adapt to environments that seem inhabitable to us. Another way that they have adapted to their habitats is through their physical appearances.
For example, zombie worms are very tiny. They are so small, they even lack a mouth and gut. They are red and pink in color. Giant squids are the opposite of zombie worms because they are extremely large. For example, they have two feeding tentacles which can be up to ten meters long, they also have eight arms that are all about half the size of their feeding tentacles. The feeding tentacles have hundreds of strong, toothed suckers and all arms have thousands of the same toothed suckers. The squid also has the largest eyes on earth, it has two eyes that are eleven inches in diameter. They are different colors, for example, at the surface of the ocean they are reddish orange or pink with spots of white and in the deeper parts of the ocean, they are silvery or gold. Yeti crabs are white or very pale yellow. They have hairy legs and chests and they measure almost six inches long. Each of these animals had to adapt to live in the sea and their appearances play a large role in this. For example, zombie worms don’t have a mouth or stomach, but instead they have skin cells that produce acid, the giant squids use their arms to catch prey and feed itself, and the crabs are able to survive in extreme heat and
cold. Most organisms on earth can’t survive without food, and usually this food all starts with photosynthesis, however in the deep-sea vents photosynthesis cannot occur so organisms have to make food chemically. For example, yeti crabs survive only on bacteria that they grow themselves. They allow bacteria to grow on their hair and then scoop it off of themselves and eat it. On the other hand, some creatures such as the giant squid or zombie worm rely on other organisms to be their source of food. The zombie worm got it’s name because their bodies create acid so they can dissolve through whale bones and into the center where they can eat the nutrients. They must do this because they lack a mouth and gut, this is how they adapted through chemicals. This is evidenced in the science article Zombie Worms Drill Whale Bones with Acid “The worms live on the skeletons of whales, which drift down to the ocean floor and constitute a rich source of nutrients.” The giant squid however hunt other fish and squids that have been washed ashore. The way that this shows adaption is because the squid has a body made for hunting, it has feeding tentacles, arms, and a beak for slicing food. Overall, these animals definitely learned to find food in whatever ways they needed to, whether it be through, chemicals or hunting. In conclusion, all organisms have to find a way to adapt in life through appearance, diet, and their habitats. Learning about these sometimes odd creatures makes you curious about what else is in the ocean that we haven’t even been able to explore yet, and how all of these creatures are able to adapt to the different habitats in the sea.
“The Tequila Worm” by Viola Canales is a marvelous book that shows the story of a young girl named sofia;on her journey to explore life but to never forget where she came from her roots which means becoming a good comadre.
Dr. Nagami had multiple reasons for writing the Woman with a Worm in Her Head. I think that she intended to educate the reader about many things. She wanted to highlight the background of the deadly diseases that she has encountered. She also wants to explain the limits of modern medicine. I also think that she wanted to put a human face on the patients that she encounters on a daily basis. She also was trying to explain how combating diseases like this and her profession as a medical doctor affected her.
The 2006 Pura Belpré Award was presented to Viola Canales for her coming-of-age tale, The Tequila Worm. Set in a Mexican American community in MacAllen, Texas, this story is told from the point-of-view of Sofia, a young girl who has many adventures in her small community. Through the course of the text Sofia develops from a young child who plays dress-up games with her cousins, to a young woman who is willing to move three hundred miles away from school.
The picture above shows the vast difference that there can be in animals, to the right is Emerita Analoga (sand crab), and to the left is Zalophus Californianus (California Sea Lion). The sand crab is an invertebrate while the seal is a vertebrate and mammal. Invertebrates make up 90% of all an...
The Meningeal Worm Infestation of up to 20 meningeal worms has been discovered in a single deer’s subdural cavity. The white tail deer are the preferred host, but they rarely ever suffer from any sick or neurological problems from this type of worm. We will see severe signs in llamas and alpacas; these are the two animals that can become infected with it frequently. The meningeal worm can cause damage to the central nervous system and could result in death, so it is important to try and catch it early and learn about how to prevent this deadly worm. Things that you should be familiar with about the meningeal worm are its life cycle, the signs in your animal, and any prevention or treatment options.
My Experiences and “The Tequila Worm” In The novel The Tequila Worm by Viola Canales we see several Mexican traditions involved, and how the character reacts towards them. In the novel we see how the Mexican traditions take a big part in the life of a young girl. Also how being attached to her family not only changes her but the whole community around. I could honestly say that I still celebrate and enjoy some of the Mexican traditions Viola Canales talks about in The Tequila Worm.
The zombie race is very different. It doesn't not have many abilities and is not advanced like humans. Their behavior patterns are different. They cannot stand cold or winter weather. Their behavior is very different and difficult to calculate. They usually stand around lingering and waiting to attack when they hear something. They follow noises. Some abilities that they do have is that they have excellent hearing and can walk but aren't blind. The also can smell human blood. Zombies are generally weak but don’t underestimate what they can do to a human.
The zombie is used as a metaphor in many different movies and pieces of literature. The zombie metaphor can represent many different types of people. In many films or movies such as 28 Hours Later or Dawn of the Dead, the zombie is a bad and monstrous presence. In So Now You’re a Zombie: A Handbook for the Newly Undead by John Austin, the roles are switched and the zombie is the main focus and the human is not. In the Zombie Survival Guide by Max Brooks, the zombie is a metaphor for a for people who at without using their brain due to brainwashing. Lastly, in the Nurses’ Role in the Prevention of Solanum Infection: Dealing with a Zombie Epidemic by David Stanley the zombie is used as a metaphor for people who are sick with extremely contagious or unknown diseases.
Worms. It's not something that most dog-owners want for their beloved pups; but unfortunately, it's something that happens all too often. Worms and other parasites aren't just disgusting to think about, they are also potentially dangerous. At the first suspicion—or sight—of worms, you should take action quickly, so that your family pet doesn't suffer from upset tummy, grumpy behavior, or death.
A way to identify a fish is by their body structure, they have fins and a backbone. The anatomical adaptation of fins helps them survive and makes them and marine animal unique in that they use them to maintain their position, move, steer, and stop. Most fish have scales and breathe though gills. Most fish also have a mucus layer that helps them prevent infections. With in what we consider “fish,” there are many that don’t very much look like they are earth creatures. The strangest fish species are found in deep ocean waters, such as the Pacific Barreleye, which is distinctive in that, its head is a fluid-filled transparent shield. Among other strange looking fish there are the Sheepshead and the Parrotfish
In the article, “A Zombie Manifesto: The Nonhuman Condition in the Era of Advanced Capitalism” by Sarah Juliet Lauro and Karen Embry, the authors’ evaluate the idea of the zombie and its connection to capitalism and post-humanism. According to the authors, the zombie represents much more than just a fear, it represents a loss of oneself to many different things, primarily to a capitalist society. The authors have come to the conclusion that humans have a fear of what they cannot control, and that is why the zombie is so big in entertainment. We see zombies everywhere, in movies, books, tv shows, fundraisers, marathons, and so much more. They have been around for decades, but recently they have become very popular. The authors believe this is
To begin with, the horseshoe crab, one the world’s oldest living creatures, are quite active. This fascinating crab has ten small walking legs under a strong, sturdy exoskeleton, a long spine in the abdomen, and a long pointy tail in the back used to push itself back up after being flipped on its back (Swinton, 99). Furthermore, horseshoe crabs got their name in an interesting way. The crab’s arc shaped exoskeleton, or shell, was compared to a horse’s shoe (Horseshoe Crab: Saint Louis Zoo). As mentioned before horseshoe crabs aren’t actually crabs. Though it may look like one, they are actually part of a family called Limuli. Some reasons it could have been misconceived as a crab are because its shell is comparable to a crab’s, the legs look a bit similar, and they are found on the Atlantic coast like other crabs. Also we can find horseshoe crab right here in North America along the hot, sandy Atlantic
Heartworms are a parasitic nematode of mammals and have first been observed in Italy in 1626 (3). Later the parasite was introduced to the Americas by European immigrants leading to the earliest recorded heartworm finding in the United States in 1847 published in The Western Journal of Medicine and Surgery (3,5). In 1995 the intracellular Gram-negative bacterial endosymbiont Wolbachia, belonging to the order Rickettsiales, was identified to reside in the heartworms tissue (4).Today heartworm infections have been reported in all states except Alaska and the number of incidents are increasing at an alarming rate (5).
With this information, of which is all theoretically possible, we now have a zombie that passes the principles of a zombie. The medical science involved has now proven that zombies are possible.Have fun and do not create this unless you want to be responsible for the mass genocide of the human race.
