Anyone who watches the film Zodiac is faced with the dilemma of trying to decipher on their own who the killer is, how the given evidence proves that, and finally how one should wrap their minds around it. The general theme of the movie is suspense followed by a continuous stream of unanswered theories given throughout the dialogue. However, all comes to a heart stopping halt during the “basement scene” when viewers are presented with the idea that our main character, Robert Graysmith, just may possibly be in the same house as a killer and eventually in a dark, menacing basement alone with the man. There are no prior implications where Vaughn would be thought of as a suspect of any kind. The scene opens into a darkly lit kitchen no doubt setting the tone for the drama that lays ahead. Even the décor of the house itself gives off an abandoned, minimally edulcorated vibe – the walls appear grimy, the lighting nearly nonexistent for a kitchen, the white of the refrigerator is the dullest shade. This all gives to the idea that Graysmith may be in the wrong place and foreshadows a sense of danger. Another tracking shot, backwards this time, following Graysmith who is readily preparing to flee the house. The scene then cuts back to Vaughn as the camera moves backwards as if we were following Graysmith’s eye sight leaving the basement. Our final shot of Vaughn directly under the light by the boxes is when he turns the lights of while both characters are still in the basement all while still talking. For a second the entire scene goes dark and we are not sure what will happen next. With a possible unknown person in the house and the darkened basement with the man who a handwriting analysist said the handwriting of the zodiac matched the person who made the film ads.
