The third is not a myth, it’s a fact, and it states that Zinc can help cure the common cold.. “A review of the research by the nonprofit Cochrane collaboration found that zinc lozenges or syrup shorten the duration of cold by day if the zinc was taken within 24 hours of the first cold symptom, however, zinc can actually impair the immune system are taken in high doses.” Cochrane collaboration advises to take 75 mg of zinc on the first day of cold with caution. They warn people to stay away from zinc nasal sprays, in which, they can cause permanent anosmia Which is a permanent loss of smell. Airborne and other formulas that contain a mismatch of vitamins and minerals that were once purported to cure a cold. No evidence supports that these formulas
Sleepytim tea made from Tilia flowers is believed to help in boosting your immune system.
According to recent statistics, zinc is the third most commonly used nonferrous metal in the United States. This unassuming metal was among the first minerals exploited by Man, used as a decorative material for thousands of years, although it never achieved the fame and notoriety of other metals such as gold or silver. In more recent times, new extraction and processing methods have allowed Man to produce higher-quality zinc than ever before, and to use it in an astonishingly high number of chemical and high-tech applications.
Herbal supplements and herbal treatments are nothing new to people looking for a way to enhance their diets or to those trying to find an alternative to traditional drugs. Such supplements include vitamins or minerals already present in the majority of foods. Other treatments are more unusual and stem from ancient Chinese healing or Native American therapies. Often these additional or alternative treatments have a positive effect on the patient. In China, during the early seventies, there were good results reported for treating bronchopneumonia in children. The doctors used herbal medicines, traditional methods of massage along the spinal column, and acupuncture and injections into needling points in conjunction with current antibiotics. This combination of traditional medicine with current medical practices had major improvements over the simple administration of antibiotics since the most recent method of antibiotics did not take into account the problems of a poor functioning cardiovascular system, spasms of the bronchi, and the fact that asthma often continues. The traditional method does have an effect on these symptoms (Risse, 108). However, despite the positive effects, there have been reported instances where men and women hav...
“Researchers at Ohio State University conducted what they say is the most scientifically rigorous test of physical changes caused by smelling the popular scents — and came up with nothing,” says JoNel Aleccia (2008). So this theory explains that the oils and the scents of the oils only make you feel good as opposed to actually getting well, that the fact that these oils actually work is all in the head.
For argument 1, the premises do follow and support their conclusion. However, what I believe the weaknesses in this argument are is the fallacy of false dilemma, and the subjectivity of the claim itself. In the debate between homeopathy and scientific medicine, it is often you are given with two choices. These choices being A) it works or B) it does not. In the field of science I believe this to be true as well. In lecture we spoke about the fallacy of false dilemma being the offering of only two choices and not having any alternative. Why I believe this first argument exemplifies this is because while the aim of homeopathy is to work in conjunction with scientific medicine, the premise “It works for some people and not for others” does not provide an alternative. There is also the weight placed on personal experience, which was covered in Chapter 5. It is not as if personal experience is wrong (like we have covered), but more so that the reliability of personal experience might not be the best example to use in this case. It is similar to possibility as well. A rational thinker knows that this person’s claim is possible, but is it as possible as the chance of rain on an overcast day, or the sun not rising in the
For many centuries, humanity has been on an eternal quest for cures and treatments for many chronic conditions. At the present time, conventional medicine is mostly performed by doctors and other health care professionals, with the extensive use of pharmaceutical drugs, surgery or radiation treatments for disease treatment. Conversely, even though not as popular, complementary and alternative medicine and treatment options are slowly gaining popularity and becoming an addition to traditional medicine.

The most common preventatives and curatives sold at the chemist's are quinine, cinnamon, and eucalyptus, with quinine being a favorite prescription by doctors.7 However, other medicines are also used against the influenza epidemic. The author of "Influenza: Its Cause and Treatment" is noted for stating that Formamint Tablets are the best source of infection prevention. Therefore, "every influenza patient should suck four or five of these tablets a day until convalescent."8 Thompson's Pure Phenol has also put out an advertisement claiming that its product can act as a cure and preventative of influenza.
The use of supplements to thwart the common cold is a widespread wives’ tale in our mainstream American culture. My mother swears up-and-down she knows how to prevent the common cold. Her secret is simple, zinc and vitamin C supplements. My little brother and I vividly remember choking down those oversized pills that left a chalky white trail down the backs of our innocent throats. Worst of all, we still got sick. This is largely why I am skeptical of supplements being beneficial to health. Research has found that combination zinc and vitamin C therapy do not offer protective effects against catching the common cold (Takkouche et al., 2002). Other research suggested that zinc and vitamin C reduce the severity and duration of cold symptoms (Wintergerst, Maggini, & Hornig, 2006). As a future practicing nurse, I wish I could advise an over the counter sore throat lozenge containing vitamin C and zinc to patients with symptoms of the common cold. However, that borders on practicing medicine without a license, which is beyond the scope of registered nursing practice. Instead, I would recommend patie...
I am going to tell youthe good things about alternative medicine. Alternative medicine is where you have to go out of state and get the treatment that you can’t get in the state you are in and then you have to get all the information that you need. When you do alternative medicine you are using the medicine to help the person that has the diseases that they have. With the increase in major diseases, alternative medicine is at a rise. People now have the option to travel to other countries for help. Alternative medicine are also increasingly used to diagnose or treat allergies, and numerous studies have reported benefits of this type of medicine. When you do this you can try and see what types of diseases or allergies that you have and if you do have anything then you can treat whatever you have. With the increase in diseases we have found we have suggested that people use alternative medicine because we can’t treat it ourselves. The people that we suggest to use alternative medicine they usually have major diseases that we can’t operate on and that we can’t treat. When people do that they have the best chance of getting better.
Alternative medicine has long been scoffed at by the mainstream medical community. People who use it, or at least believe in its benefits, are termed “wacky.” Physicians even go so far as to tell curious patients not to bother with the alternative “insanity,” claiming only hippies and desperados use it. Doctors are trusted daily with the lives of their patients, and if a doctor insists on a specific treatment, and advises against another, patients will be more than likely to do as they are told. But if a natural therapy has a positive effect on disease, then why not use it? Why not keep patients informed on all fronts: offer the details on every treatment that has shown promise, whether it pads the pharmaceutical companies’ pockets or not.
In today’s world, many people assume that the latest medical technology and treatments are always the best option. However, all over the world, different techniques for curing diseases and aliments are being used. These methods fall under the category of complementary and alternative medicine.

Few of the recommended is Echinacea and andographis, they join forces to fight against the symptoms of colds, flus, and upper respiratory tract infections. Studies have shown that about 75% of alternative remedies are not backed up by any scientific research. Most remedies or therapies are backed up by biased research instead of actual studies.
